Description of Work Unit

El Centro is part of the Office for Inclusive Excellence, specifically one of the seven Cultural Resource Centers that support underrepresented students at Colorado State University ( CSU ). The mission of El Centro is to provide support for the Latinx/é, Afro-Latinx/é, Chicanx/é, Hispanic and multiracial/multiethnic community at CSU and Fort Collins. We do this by encouraging student engagement, academic success, cultural pride, empowerment, and volunteer/leadership opportunities. We strive to promote an inclusive environment that focuses on awareness and understanding of the Latinx experience. El Centro supports and strengthens the academic, professional, personal and cultural experience of students by providing student success initiatives, leadership opportunities, and initiatives focused on cultural exploration and cultural empowerment. In coalition with other Cultural Resource Centers and campus partners, El Centro contributes to, and helps implement, initiatives that promote student success, student retention, cultural exploration/empowerment, and leadership development.

Position Summary

The Assistant Director is a full-time, 12-month Administrative Professional position in El Centro, one of seven Cultural Resource Centers within the Office for Inclusive Excellence. The Assistant Director shares in providing leadership for the mission of El Centro through visioning and oversight of El Centro’s student success initiatives and cultural empowerment initiatives. The position is responsible for supervising, training, and coaching one FTE , student staff, individual students, and student groups by providing appropriate support and resources.

The Assistant Director provides leadership and works collaboratively with campus partners to development, implement and evaluate strategies focused on student success and retention. Secondly, the Assistant Director works collaboratively to lead, implement and evaluate education and outreach programming focused on social justice issues impacting Latinx/é, Afro-Latinx/é, Chicanx/é, Hispanic and multiracial/multiethnic communities. Knowledge of and experience with educational programming and college student success from an intersectional framework are two core components of this position. In addition, this position will actively embrace and role model Colorado State University’s Principle’s of Community (Inclusion, Integrity, Respect, Service, Social Justice).

The Assistant Director is a direct report to the Director of El Centro, assuming leadership responsibilities and delegated decision-making authority for all department operations in the absence of the Director. Evening and weekend work hours depend on program and event offerings or to best meet the needs of students.

Travel funds for interviews are limited to $1,500 maximum.

The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by the proposed start date; the department will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Required Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.

  • At least two years of full-time experience working with college students and/or helping young adults prepare for college.

  • One-year direct staff supervision experience, including student staff, full-time and/or part-time staff.

  • Demonstrated understanding of the diverse, intersectional needs and concerns of Latinx/Latiné students and communities.

  • Demonstrated experience with coordinating, planning, facilitating and evaluating cultural/educational programming and curriculum.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Student Affairs, Sociology, Social Work, Latinx/Hispanic/Chicanx Studies, Ethnic Studies, Women’s, Gender or Sexuality Studies or related field by the start date.

  • At least two years of full-time experience working directly with college students in order to support their development and success.

  • Experience with personnel management including coordinating, hiring, training and supervision of full-time professional staff and student staff.

  • Demonstrated experience coordinating and planning college student success and retention initiatives for Latinx/é, Chicanx/é, Afro-Latinx/é, Hispanic, and/or multiracial/multiethnic students and/or other historically underrepresented college student populations.

  • Demonstrated experience working directly with college students related to the personal engagement of dynamics of power, privilege, and/or oppression across multiple identities (i.e. race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, class, disability, religion, etc.).

  • Demonstrated experience establishing and maintaining effective collaborative relationships with individuals and organizations across identities in order to support student success and/or shared outcomes.

  • Using identity conscious supervision practices, supervise, coach, hire, train and evaluate 1 full-time Coordinator responsible for various projects including oversight of El Centro’s mentoring program.

  • Using equity-focused practices, provide visioning, leadership, and oversight for El Centro’s hiring practices, training practices, evaluation procedures, onboarding and offboarding for a variety of student staff/student leader positions.

  • Provide leadership for the ongoing development of El Centro’s mission, vision, and purpose, and help co-lead the resulting practices and philosophies.

  • Directly and indirectly supervise, hire, and evaluate 10 student staff using identity conscious supervision practices.

  • Lead staff through sensitive, difficult, and complex student concerns that involve mental health, financial pressures, bias-related situations, family obligations and school/work/family balance and other challenges, which require professional care, problem-solving, empathy, and communication skills to work with faculty, students, families, and community partners to help resolve multifaceted issues.

  • Use collaborative, student-centered philosophies to develop, plan, implement and evaluate large-scale programming for which the Assistant Director is responsible, such as National Latinx/é Heritage Month, El Centro’s Graduation Ceremony, etc.

  • Provide oversight, vision and direction for large-scale programming assigned to supervisees, such as the full-time Coordinator and/or student staff.

  • Use student-centered, collaborative, and reflexive approaches to develop, plan, implement and evaluate programming focused on identity development and exploration.

  • Demonstrated experience with data collection, creating reports, assessment, and developing/implementing learning outcomes.
