The Opportunity
In this role, you will have the opportunity to:
Plan, schedule,conduct, and coordinateprocess safety work for a global business unit delivering FEED and EPC projects in the traditional oil & gas industry as well as new energy process solutions such as hydrogen and carbon capture.
Performwork that involves conventional engineering practice, but may include solving complex risk and safety design issues.
Support multiple projects as a subject matter expert.
Review and provide design recommendations for new projects and proposed facility modifications to ensure conformance with process safety and loss prevention codes, standards, and procedures.
Prepareand/or assistin the preparation of conceptual and design safety studies for projects.
Provide process safety consultation and guidance to project teams for scope of work documents, schedules, activities, and milestones.
Provide technical and thought leadership on process safety technologies and strategies.
Review lower-level engineering work or assignments as well as the process safety design and strategy implemented on major projects.
Contribute to proposal reviews to ensure safety protocol alignment between BV and subcontractors, assists in the preparation of cost estimates, quantity take-offs and staffing requirements for proposals.
Contribute to a work culture that fosters communication and teamwork.
This is a hybrid opportunity which allows our employees to work two days a week from other locations outside the office (3 days in office per week). This role may require up to 20% travel, including international. Preference for candidates located or willing to relocate to Kansas City (Black & Veatch World Headquarters) or Houston.

Management Responsibilities
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from either a recognized accredited program in their home country or the country in which the professional is practicing.
Minimum of 15 years related work experience.
All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include any/all of the following: criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with any applicable laws and regulations.
Preferred Qualifications
Certified Process Safety Professional in accordance with the Center for Chemical Process Safety or equivalent.
Professional Engineer (PE) License.
Proven skills in the analysis of process safety on a variety of process projects including LNG, FLNG, ammonia, hydrogen generation, carbon capture and sustainable fuels.
Ability to determine the appropriate safety studies that should be applied to a variety of process projects.
Ability to write safety philosophy for a variety of process projects.
In-depth experience and capability to direct and manage the following process safety activities, including the ability to write and administer consulting agreements for:
Facility siting study.
Fire water system design including fire water demand, P&IDs, layouts, data sheets, etc.
Fireproofing philosophy and material selection.
Fire & gas detection layouts and cause & effect diagrams.
Hazardous area classification.
Escape route/life safety review.
Safety studies like HAZID/ENVID, HAZOP, SIL, QRA, consequence modeling, etc.
Vent dispersion.
Blast overpressure.
Vapor dispersion.
Experience with offshore safety practices and requirements from classification societies such as DNV, Bureau Veritas, ABS and Lloyds.
Working knowledge of various international codes and standards including NFPA.
Ability to facilitate HAZID analysis of a variety of process projects.
Working experience with modeling tools like Phast, FLACS, KFX, etc., including utilizing as a screening tool during early stages of projects.
Management and coordination of environmental impact assessments (EIA) and environmental audits related to process safety.
Preference for experience with major EPC contractors.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering Standards: Proactively provides technical guidance and direction. Interpreting, applying and providing direction to larger assigned tasks. May own the maintaining, updating, and developing engineering standards.
Quality / Continuous Improvement: Establishes related processes, and promotes a culture conducive to quality. Supports continuous improvement, change management and risk management efforts.
Engineering Production: Accountable for managing engineering design-related aspects of complex project(s) or multiple small projects, including engineering schedule and budget performance, quality of engineering solutions and deliverables, and coordination of design, procurement, and construction. Orchestrates all technical aspects and makes project engineering execution decisions within the bounds set by applicable policies, standards, guides and contract commitments. Responsible for leading production teams; coordinating multiple discipline activity; and serving as the responsible charge for projects. Establishes work plans.
Project Coordination: Actively coordinates with all other internal/external team members. Responsible for coordinating project schedules for multiple disciplines.
Client Focus: Responsible for determining identification of key client interests and drivers on projects. Communicates client interests to project team and develops approaches to accommodate concerns in the performance of the work. Works to identify future client needs and how to better position Black and Veatch for the future. Typically provides support to business development or pursuit activities.
Knowledge Sharing, Innovation and Technology: Serves as the senior level technical specialist in a broad area of specialization, or in a narrow, but specialized field. Develops and applies advanced engineering concepts and approaches to unique engineering problems. Typical roles include being recognized as an industry expert, participating in professional societies by presenting papers, acting as a section lead for a large or complex specialty area, an engineering consultant for larger scale projects. Often supports a division chief engineer or top engineering management, and is accountable for discipline-specific engineering processes.
People Management: Provides direction to a small size group Typically oversees performance management, career planning, recognition, learning and development May participate in compensation management, succession planning, disciplinary actions, employee relations and workforce planning
Resource Management (budgets, tools, processes, project support): Influences and implements resource management strategy. Manages engineering resources for small size and/or less complex group, typically involving one line of business or discipline. Common responsibilities include staffing, recruiting, budgets, tools and/or processes. Resolves resource conflicts and identifies training needs. Administrative responsibilities may include supervising group operations and budgets. May support IT, office administration, and facilities. Ensures policies, procedures, and processes are effectively developed, implemented, and communicated for workgroup. Ensures adherence to corporate and division programs. May approve timesheets and expense reports.
Management Scope Factors: Pending nature of role, scope of influence may include a significant-size group. May influence costs, productivity, or competitiveness. Geographic responsibility may be for 1+ offices or a small region. Typical scope involves less complex business line or technology responsibility, and/or less complex discipline responsibility. Supports mitigation of risk related to projects/technologies.
Certifications
Most positions - depending on the nature of work performed as defined by the division - will typically require incumbents to have professional registration or licensure in their designated home office country, or be in active pursuit* of such registration
