Summary

The Histologist consistently provides excellent customer service to patients and customers of the laboratory and works closely with coworkers to meet the needs of physicians, nurses and patients. The Histologist is responsible for the cytological and histological tissue preparations for examination by the Pathologist, including frozen sections, autopsy tissues, surgical tissues, cytology cases, gross specimen photography, and gross tissue examinations. The Histologist is responsible for accurately and quickly performing a variety of duties within the Histology department including assisting in gross tissue examinations, embedding, cutting, stains, special stains, immuno-histochemical and immuno-fluorescent studies, filing, tracking and accessioning. The Histologist adheres to performance and quality standards. Responsible for clinical instrument maintenance. Responsible for training of other laboratory coworkers. Participates in the overall functioning of the clinical laboratory, participating on committees and projects. Responsible for keeping the laboratory in continuous readiness for inspection. Possesses knowledge of techniques, instruments, and the basic medical sciences. Responsible for the consequences of his/her own decisions.

Education

Must have successfully completed a histotechnology program. Due to CLIA regulations, transcripts of education and training will be verified.

Or

Must meet or exceed the basic requirements for admission into either the IU Medical School of Histotechnology program or the Hartford School of Histotechnology Certification Program. Must enroll in and successfully complete the program within two years of hire. Due to CLIA regulations, transcripts of education and training will be verified. – Will hired inas a Lab Histology Technician until school is completed.

Licensure/Certification

Must be a certified Histologic Technician (HT ASCP) or Histotechnologist (HTLASCP).

Or

Receive above certification within 6 months of completing a histotechnology program.

Other Qualifications

Must be able to lift 40 pounds. Must have good verbal and written communication skills.
