Vice President & Head of Global Medical Affairs – Virology and Liver, Inflammation, Fibrosis, & Established Products

The Vice President, Global Medical Affairs (GMA) will provide oversight in the areas of prevention (PrEP) and treatment of HIV, hepatitis (B, C, and Delta), inflammation and fibrosis, as well as established products across Gilead’s therapeutic areas. The VP, GMA will have overall responsibility for overseeing the Medical Affairs Department globally in these therapeutic areas by providing strategic leadership for all Medical Affairs activities and developing and executing the Integrated Strategic Plan (ISP). Will oversee the development and execution of the long-term strategy through the global Medical Affairs Plan of Action (POA) for each of these therapeutic areas based on a landscape assessment of unmet needs, with inputs from colleagues within Medical Affairs as well as cross-functionally, and provide oversight and direction to country affiliate Medical Affairs teams for local implementation. Additionally, will oversee the Medical Affairs Research group, which provides global operational MA research capabilities across therapeutic areas.

The VP, GMA will report to the SVP and Head of Global Medical Affairs. They will operate cross-functionally by engaging with the diverse teams across Gilead including, but not limited to: Research and Development, Regulatory Affairs, Commercial Operations, Government Affairs, and Public Affairs.

Key Responsibilities:

Reporting to the SVP of Medical Affairs, Regulatory Affairs, Patient Safety, & Quality, this role will lead and manage a global team in the corporate offices in Foster City, CA, US; in our other corporate offices in the US and UK, and GMA staff located around the world. You will help lead and direct country affiliate medical affairs staff of relevant therapeutic areas in offices around the world.

  • Managing all Global MA staff responsible for Virology and Liver, Inflammation, Fibrosis, & Established Products

  • oLeads MA team’s involvement in development of strategic plans in a cross functional manner including contributions to Integrated Strategic Plan (ISP), MA Global Plan of Action, Integrated Evidence Plan, Conference Strategy, and Publication Plans, etc

  • Chairs, or delegates chair, of Global Review Committee (GRC) for Investigator Sponsored Research (ISR) and Phase 4 research assessment

  • Manages the MA Research staff responsible for planning and strategy for Virology MA research as well as those responsible to providing global, cross-therapeutic area operational delivery of MA research capabilities

Leads the delivery of timely, accurate and succinct communication of fair-balanced clinical and scientific presentations to healthcare professionals, both proactively and in response to requests for information, consistent with promotional compliance and regulatory requirements.

  • Chair Editorial Review Board (ERB) for review and approval of all scientific content.

  • Approves all abstracts, manuscripts, posters and slides for internal and external educational meetings

  • Develop strategic topics and slides for Medical Scientist (MS) training and use

  • Leading the Global Publication Plan for relevant therapeutic areas

  • Accountable for accuracy of all Standard Response Documents (SRDs) within relevant therapeutic areas

Responsible for, in conjunction with Medical Information, ensuring the successful dissemination of innovative clinical information to thought leaders and foster medical and scientific information exchange from and throughout the specific disease communities.

Develops and maintains positive professional relationships with thought-leaders based on mutual respect and the sincere interest in sharing perspective on medical therapies. This includes obtaining feedback from the independent community of relevant healthcare professionals within relevant therapeutic areas.

Coaches, oversees and conducts performance evaluations of Medical Affairs personnel via active observation of the team; establishment of clearly defined team and individual goals & objectives (quantitative and qualitative); implementation of processes to routinely monitor.

Collaborates effectively and in a compliant manner with colleagues in other functional areas throughout Gilead.

Acts as patient advocate to ensure the successful delivery of therapy

Qualifications:

  • 15+ years Medical Affairs experience

  • MD degree required; MD/PhD preferred

  • Previous pharmaceutical industry experience

  • Clinical experience in infectious diseases preferred

  • Solid working knowledge of regulatory and compliance environment

  • Excellent strategic thinking skills, with demonstrated ability to successfully lead the ideation and development of a plan and move to action

  • Possess a willingness and ability to work hands-on and with a sense of urgency, in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment

  • Existing contacts with HIV or infectious disease institutions and/or hospitals preferred

  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills

  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively present to and engage with a wide range of audiences

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Computer proficiency in Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Adobe

  • Ability to travel approximately 20%
