CITY OF GAHANNA Building Inspector in Gahanna, Ohio

Job Summary

Supervises the issuing of building permits and ensures residential and commercial structures are constructed according to approved construction documents and building codes.   Starting Salary Range: The starting salary is between the minimum and midpoint of the range ($59,571.20 - $72,987.20 annually).  Candidates will start at the minimum of the range unless their skills, experience, education or other factors exceed the qualifications for the position.   

Essential Job Functions
  • Conducts building inspections to determine and ensure construction, alterations and maintenance are in compliance with approved plans and applicable codes.  Conducts building safety inspections to determine hazardous conditions and structural defects; ensures repairs are identified and reported.
  • Examines and approves plans and specifications for one, two, and three family dwellings, including decks, sheds and other related structures before a permit or license may be issued, signs and issues permits and licenses, certificates and notices required by municipal codes and ordinances.
  • Enforces laws, codes, and ordinances relating to the construction of new buildings, and the alteration and safety of existing ones.
  • Maintains records relating to the location, value and character of buildings, structures, or other work for which a certificate or permit is issued; prepares and maintains inspection and other necessary reports; assists entry of inspection results.
  • Provides final occupancy inspection with coordination of the approval with appropriate governmental agencies.
  • Performs inspections of disputed properties and may testify in court as to the results of the inspection.
  • Interprets and explains City requirements and procedures in complying with approved plans, ordinances and codes to owners, builders, authorities, and court officials as applicable.
  • Coordinates activities with appropriate officials and inspection contractors to ensure coordination of activities.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. A typical way to qualify is two (2) to three (3) years of progressively responsible related experience, a high school diploma or equivalent, and required certifications. 
  • Licensure or Certification Requirements

Ohio Certification as Building Inspector & Residential Building Official.

Current and valid Ohio Driver's license with an acceptable driver's abstract in order to meet criteria for insurability established by the City of Gahanna.

  • All phases of the installation and repair of various heating/cooling systems of residential buildings.
  • All applicable state, federal and local ordinances, laws, rules and regulations.

  • Administrative and managerial principles, concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • Administration of staff and activities, either directly or through subordinate supervision.
  • All computer applications and hardware related to performance of the essential functions of the job.
  • Department organization, standard operating guidelines and policies, rules, and regulations.
