The Area Coordinator is a professional position in the SUNY Geneseo Division of Student and Campus Life. As such, the Area Coordinator is expected to fulfill their specific responsibilities in a way that demonstrates an understanding and commitment to the articulated mission and goals of their department and the division. Area Coordinators are also expected to adhere to the professional and ethical standards promulgated by the professional association with which their department is affiliated.

Area Coordinators (AC) are live-in professional Residence Life staff members and are required to live in the on-campus apartment provided by SUNY Geneseo. The Area Coordinator’s primary duty is to oversee and develop multiple residence halls (two to three) as residential educators, informed supervisors, connection builders, creative managers, and accurate record-keepers. This responsibility includes informal counseling and co-curricular education of residential students, supervision of a staff of resident assistants, and oversight of facilities needs. Due to the nature of this work, the Area Coordinator is required to reside in the apartment provided and assigned by the College via the Department of Residence Life.

To be successful, you will have academic interests and experiences that include residential education, leadership development, a commitment to diversity, civic and social engagement, and an understanding of the needs of students transitioning to college, especially first-year and transfer students. We value colleagues who will be educators outside the classroom, who demonstrate intellectual curiosity and a commitment to academic excellence. By working collaboratively with colleagues both within and beyond the Residence Life department, ACs help residents foster leadership skills, develop critical reasoning skills, and practice ethical decision-making.

This position requires flexibility of work hours, including some evening and weekend work. As live-on professionals, ACs are considered “essential College personnel,” and must have skills in crisis management. Each AC participates in a night and weekend duty schedule, requiring periodic overnight monitoring of a duty phone, the ability to respond to emergency situations, and other related residential duties.

Required Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to foster diverse and inclusive relationships as well as a high degree of cultural sensitivity.

  • Ability to live in the provided on-campus apartment for the duration of employment in the AC position

    Preferred Qualifications

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree.

  • Professional or paraprofessional experience in residence life or commensurate experience in student affairs.

Function 1: Administration of Hall

  • Administer two to three residence halls by supervising hall opening and closing

  • Oversee furniture and key inventories

  • Track occupancy and administer assignments and room changes

  • Maintain office hours in a residence hall office

  • Address damages and manage damage billing

  • Assess building maintenance needs and communicate them effectively

  • Balance and maintain a budget for hall programming

  • Maintain up-to-date records and files

  • Address quality of life issues in the residence hall

  • Monitor payroll time sheets and mandatory training for RAs

Function 2: Build Positive Connections

  • Build and sustain positive relationships with residents of the halls individually by being available and accessible

  • Support RA and Hall Council programs

  • Maintain the safety and security of the residence hall

  • Proactively address roommate issues and work to resolve roommate conflicts

  • Provide college life orientation for residents by modeling positive interactions, sending community messages, and encouraging staff to host community meetings

  • Create a positive environment to support students’ academic success at the College

  • Sustain connections between faculty and students

  • Develop positive relationships with custodial and maintenance staff

  • Create and oversee the halls’ education plans based on the Residence Life Mission and Educational Priority, Learning Goals, and the Student and Campus Life Learning Outcomes

  • Hold student conduct meetings, provide informal counseling, and participate in emergency preparedness and emergency response

Function 3: Staff Development

  • Hire student staff and actively supervise, train, and evaluate ARDs and RAs

  • Some ACs also supervise a Residence Director Intern and indirectly oversee their residence hall

  • Meet regularly with the paraprofessional staff, both individually and as a team

  • Prioritize active team building

Function 4: Institutional Liaison

  • Provide overnight emergency service by serving on the duty rotation

  • Establish/maintain relationships with other College offices

  • Serve as a resource person for needed referrals

  • Attend/participate in weekly Residence Life staff meetings, Learning meetings, and Professional Development opportunities
