GE Aerospace Lead CNC Machining Manufacturing Engineer in Gloucester, United Kingdom

Job Description Summary

GE Aerospace - Dowty, we design, manufacture, repair and overhaul a range of carbon fibre composite propeller systems for military and civil applications from our new state of the art headquarters facility in Brockworth, Gloucestershire, UK.

The successful applicant will join the Manufacturing Engineering team who translate designed intent into production solutions for the manufacturing team and their suppliers. We use a Safety, Quality, Delivery & Costs framework operating across serial production, new product introduction and new technology introduction programs.

Leading a small but growing team, you will be responsible for the process design, continuous improvement and specification of our in house CNC manufacturing capabilities.

Job Responsibilities

  • Keeping yourself, the ME team, and the business safe and compliant in all your daily tasks.

  • Authoring and approving manufacturing processes, process specifications, tooling solutions and rework activities centred around CNC machining.

  • Working with Engineering and Quality functions within the business, engage with external suppliers, using knowledge of machining process to address issues arising in the supply chain.

  • Execute structured problem solving and robust root cause corrective actions (RCCA).

  • Provide technical, machining task planning and authorisation for repair, overhaul and rework activities.

  • Implementation of a Lean system and calculation of process standard times.

  • Advise and support daily shopfloor management escalation meetings, process escapes and shopfloor queries.

  • Work to develop a modern ME function searching out and developing business cases for new technology and business investment to enhance productivity & quality.

  • Contribute to the creation of a factory of the future and associated technologies.

  • Stay abreast of industry trends in the drive toward the future of flight and sustainable aviation.

Minimum Qualifications, Experience and Characteristics

  • A completed Manufacturing / Engineering Technician Apprenticeship (Level 3) or, demonstrated experience in a manufacturing environment.

  • Able to interpret 2D (legacy) drawings, technical specifications, and review manufacturability challenges and production solutions.

  • First-hand experience of manufacturing aerospace components using CNC lathes and milling machines.

  • Experience with online programming of CNC machine tools with Fanuc and Hiedenhain CNC controllers.

  • Experience using 3D Modelling and drafting CAD software (preferably CATIA V5).

  • Solid understanding of basic metrology principles, including CMM inspection.

  • Excellent written and verbal communications.

  • Understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).

  • Conscientious, tenacious and positive outlook with a can-do attitude and an real appetite to learn.

Desired Qualifications, Experience and Characteristics

  • Engineering Technician Accreditation

  • HNC in an Engineering discipline (Level 4) or equivalent.

  • Experience with offline programming for CNC lathes and milling machines using CAD/CAM software (ideally Catia V5).

  • Knowledge of machining using simultaneous 5 axis machining strategies.

  • Experience machine carbon fibre composite materials.

  • Experience programming and operating CMM’s (ideally using Modus or PolyWorks software).

  • Expert in geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T),in accordance with BS308-3 AND ASME Y14.5.

  • Lean Six Sigma knowledge and a deep interest in continuous improvement
