Position Summary

The CHM West Michigan Building Maintenance Worker performs tasks necessary for basic preventative maintenance on various mechanical, electrical, and structural systems located in the Michigan State University Grand Rapids Research Center (GRRC), Doug Meijer Medical Innovation Building (DMMIB) and the Secchia Center.

The Preventative Maintenance worker assists with moving furniture for building events, unloading and setting up equipment, and performing various duties necessary to maintain the high standards expected by building occupants and visitors.

The Building Maintenance Worker reports to the Building Services Engineer and works closely with the other members of the Operations/Facilities team. This position involves interacting with faculty, staff, students, contract workers, and vendors to ensure continued day-to-day operations of CHM West Michigan buildings.

45% Maintenance and repairs of building systems, equipment, and structures

  • Lubricates, cleans, repairs, and services equipment

  • Changes filters, belts, seals, bearings, etc.

  • Replaces light bulbs, fuses, ballasts, and makes minor electrical switch repairs and replacements.

  • Patches and re-plasters walls and ceilings and touch-up paint

  • Make minor adjustments to heating and cooling equipment

  • Adjusts water softeners.

  • Assists in loading and unloading tools, materials, supplies, and equipment.

  • Performs minor plumbing repairs

  • Maintains landscaping and outdoor spaces

35% Assists with event setup, lab moves/retrofits and manages work requests

  • Moves furniture before and after events

  • Moves and setup of equipment such as lab freezers, refrigerators

  • Installs cylinder restraints in lab spaces

  • Uses work request software to complete work orders

15% Assists with mandated compliance checks and inspections

  • Fire pump tests

  • Annual fire system checks

  • Laboratory eyewash and safety shower checks

  • Fire extinguisher inspections

  • Boiler checks

5% Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements

  • One year of satisfactory experience or an equivalent combination of technical training and experience in repair methods, equipment, and tools of the various building trades is necessary.

  • Possession of a valid Michigan vehicles operator's license(s) is necessary.

  • Supply own tools.

  • Frequent lifting of less than 25 pounds and occasional lifting of over 75 pounds is required.
