This posting is for a Transportation Supervisor I in the Granville County Maintenance Office. Work is related to maintenance and repair of State-maintained roads within Granville County. In this position you will supervise a crew of subordinates in the maintenance and construction of highways as well as other duties assigned. This position will supervise roadway maintenance crew working in and around heavy traffic, heavy equipment and with power tools. You must be able to maintain a close team environment or work independently, as needed. Responsibilities include supervision of roadway maintenance crew involved in drainage maintenance, patching, shoulder repair, paved and unpaved roadway maintenance, vegetation management, snow and ice removal and emergency response to roadway maintenance needs. You must be able to install and maintain work zone control plans, complete daily work reports, and conduct daily tailgate meetings. This position requires you to work nights and weekends as needed for emergencies and planned operations in all types of weather conditions and on uneven surfaces and slopes. Your work includes reading and interpreting plans, determining personnel, equipment and material needs to complete assigned maintenance tasks. Employees are responsible for making appropriate adjustments of plans to meet field conditions, planning, monitoring and ensuring safety standards are adhered to, daily documentation of personnel, material and equipment usage, responding to public inquiries, attending training and continuing education classes to keep up to date on all state and federal regulations and maintaining certifications in all required areas (i.e.: traffic control and environmental stewardship).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Experience in road maintenance and repair, as well as maintenance equipment operation.

  • Experience in record keeping, such as tracking employees and equipment time and recording quantities of materials used.

  • Experience in NCDOT snow and ice operations.

  • Experience in Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety Policy and Practices.

  • Experience in planning work and supervising a work crew.

Additional Expectations:

Position may require heavy lifting. Safety toe footwear is required.

The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Class A Commercial Driver's License with N endorsement on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of an on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and six years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience. Experience must be related to functional area of the work that the position will supervise.
