Description:
The primary purpose of this position is to manage and oversee Beef Cattle Research Herd and to coordinate experimental protocols with the Principal Investigator for implementation. The position will be required for hiring and supervising student personnel; administering, developing, and implementing animal care policies and procedures; and establishing short-term goals and development an annual budget. The person must be knowledgeable of environmental concerns and participate in planning long-range goals. This person is also a primary in all production activities on the farm in relation to hay, silage, and field crops.
Assist with events setup and post event activities of moving tables, chairs and related supplies
Help with parking and event participants transportation
Assist with tours of new pavilion and farm
Assist with setting up outdoor displays for pavilion events
Train and utilize new technology and dairy milk management system
Assist with extension high tunnel construction and develop/execute fence maintenance program for the farm plan and construct 21,000 ft of fencing to replace old farm fences at dairy, sheep and beef unit
Spearheads all special farm projects by creating material lists, acquiring supplies, organizing the labor and serving as the lead person to see the projects to a successful and superior completion
Created and develop Catastrophic Animal Management Plans for all animal units and revamped Standard Operating Procedure Manuals
Obtained CDL permit to operate farm’s shuttle buses and serve as one of the drivers for all crew trips off the farm and for tour groups visiting the farm
Serve as a lead for the entire sub group that alternate to milk cows monthly
Lead instruction and training for beef cattle labs for hundreds of students per semester and the professors who lack the skill sets
Trouble shoot and perform complex repairs that even the mechanics can’t solve on newly acquired high tech equipment
Serve as lead technical support person on cannulated cows(8) project in add research protocol
Help manage additional 150 acres of leased farm land that include spraying,harvesting,baling hay, transporting hay and grain and other related production needs
Assumes the lead role on the farm, in the absence of the assistant superintendent
Primary Function of Organizational Unit:
The University Farm is a vital component of the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences ( CAES ), which is the oldest academic unit at North Carolina A&T State University. The primary purpose of the farm is to provide resources in the form of land, animals, water, personnel, expertise, equipment and facilities to researchers conducting studies in agriculture and serve as an outdoor laboratory for the CAES . The University farm is a 492 acre unit owned by the university with 15 permanent employees, 2-4 temporary employees and numerous student employees; annually and seasonal.
The farm serves approximately 25 scientists from A&T, and 4 to 6 scientists from surrounding universities, encompassing studies in crops, animals aquaculture, organics, soils and pesticides. To further facilitate these studies, the farm is divided into 7 different units, with each having a coordinator and staff or student labor to orchestra given protocols. These units are: swine, beef cow, dairy, poultry, small ruminant, field crops and horticulture. Each of these areas is an intricate part of interdisciplinary studies at the university and in the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences. The units are used weekly by agriculture and related classes during the semester for their practical, hands on experience and laboratory exercises. The farm is within 3 miles of the main campus, thus providing easy access to instructors, classes, as well as graduate and undergraduate students conducting continual education studies. The farm is also a great resource for the community by providing weekly tours for local, regional, state and national groups seeking exposure and the experience of a model farm.

Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Journey: 4 year degree + 1 year of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of training and/or related experience.

Preferred:
Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science or related curriculum and two years of experience in beef cattle research.
