Hagerstown Community College Faculty, Foreign Languages in Hagerstown, Maryland

SUMMARY STATEMENT

This full-time, tenure track faculty position is responsible for teaching foreign language courses and other courses as necessary within the division. This instructor will be a member of the English and Humanities Division with all the responsibilities of a regular HCC faculty member. Additionally, this instructor will have the responsibility for leadership of the Foreign Languages Program including curriculum development and SLOA-related duties. 

 

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

A.    The instructor reports directly to and is responsible to the Division Director of English & Humanities Division.

 

B.    The instructor works with the Division Director to provide leadership for other faculty members and staff involved with teaching language courses.

 

FACULTY RESPONSIBILITIES

A.    Teaching -- A faculty member is expected to prepare for and teach 15 credits in the fall and spring terms. Overload teaching is available with the approval of the Vice President of Academic Affairs and Student Services.

 

B.    Assessment -- A faculty member is expected to assess learning outcomes at the course, program, general education and institutional levels.

 

C.    Student Advisement -- A faculty member is expected to advise students on courses, programs and career/transfer objectives, with support from Student Affairs.

 

D.    Student Advocacy -- A faculty member should be committed to student learning and success and be available to help students as needed.

 

E.    Curriculum Development -- A faculty member must be current in their field and transfer that knowledge to students with course content, and via teaching delivery. They are also expected to make continuous updates to the curriculum, and keep up-to-date with changing technology.

 

F.    Recruitment and Marketing -- A faculty member is a college ambassador with special obligations to promote his/her discipline or program to students and to the local community.   G.    Shared Governance -- A faculty member participates in all levels of shared college governance, including- departmental, divisional, and institutional-wide activities.

 

H.    Professional Development -- A faculty member maintains an approved professional development plan that supports the college's strategic goals.

 

I.    College Service -- A faculty member is expected to serve the college in activities addressing departmental responsibilities, and/or community outreach, and/or student and campus life activities.

 

J.    Community Service -- A faculty member serves the college in voluntary community service activity, that positively reflects the college's image, and is not in conflict with the college's strategic goals or their faculty responsibilities.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

In addition to the regular faculty responsibilities listed above, the instructor:

A.    As requested by the VP and/or Division Director, observes and mentors selected adjuncts within their division, and makes recommendations for improvement.

 

B.    Works with the Division Director and other faculty, to develop and maintain the courses which are required for this program.

 

C.    Works with the Division Director of the English & Humanities Division to coordinate the Foreign Languages program including the:

  1.    Assessment of student learning outcomes at the program and course level, with establishment and coordination of a community-based advisory committee

     

  2.    Leadership of student recruitment efforts with assistance from the Admissions and/or Advising departments

Requirements

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

A Master's degree is required within Foreign Languages or a closely related discipline. In addition, strong organizational, advising, counseling, and classroom management skills are necessary. As well as a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students, faculty, staff, and administ ators.

 

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Preference will be given to candidates who have recent teaching experience in Spanish, French, and German at the community college level or higher.
