The Mechatronics team designs and builds innovative mechatronics and automation systems for large-scale deployment in Amazon’s fulfillment network. We build the Mechatronics and Automation solutions that enable the efficiencies that customers have come to expect from Amazon's retail business. We are a global organization, with research and development labs in Hamme, Belgium, Seattle, WA and Milan, Italy. Our development portfolio is focused on automation solutions that provide broad extensibility across Amazon businesses.

Key job responsibilities

  • Lead a team of high performing hardware engineers (Mechanical, Electrical and Controls Engineer), providing guidance, mentorship, and support to foster professional growth.

  • Create a culture of excellence, collaboration, and accountability within the hardware development team.

  • Oversee the entire hardware development lifecycle from concept to production in the automation space, ensuring projects are completed on time and within budget. Allocate resources effectively and manage risks proactively.

  • Foster a culture of high engineering standards to deliver reliable, deployable and cost-effective automation solutions that can scale Amazon's Operations business globally and improve the customer experience

  • Collaborate closely with other teams such as software development, product management, deployment, finance and quality assurance to ensure seamless integration of new hardware systems.

  • Establish and maintain quality standards and procedures for hardware development.

  • Develop and manage budgets for hardware development projects, tracking expenses and ensuring cost-effective utilization of resources. Identify opportunities for cost optimization and efficiency improvements.

  • Ensure that hardware products comply with relevant industry regulations, certifications, and safety standards.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelors in an engineering discipline

  • Years of experience in a strategic role leading a mechatronics engineering team focused on development of high-tech automation solutions

  • Demonstrated people management experience leading a team of Mechanical, Electrical and Controls engineers, with a focus on high standards and career development

  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks, allocate resources, and meet deadlines.

  • Deep technical expertise in hardware design, prototyping, testing, and manufacturing processes

  • Excellent written & verbal communication skills, capable of building strategic plans and influencing cross-functional teams to support innovation for our technology roadmap

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience and success developing & deploying automation, robotics or mechatronics solutions over a global footprint

  • Demonstrated management experience leading an engineering team of 25+ people

  • A track record of growing, retaining & developing high performing engineering talent

  • A history of influence at the senior leadership level to deliver advanced solutions and develop business priorities,

  • Experience with regulatory compliance and certification processes (e.g., CE, UL).

  • Expertise in implementing world-class engineering processes, tools & procedures
