As a Materials Engineer, the focus will be on materials development and
characterization, lab hardware development, instrumentation,
experimentation, and analysis to develop and demonstrate new materials,
devices, and technical capabilities. Typical activities include
literature research; performance analysis; and design, assembly,
programming, and operation of custom hardware for experimentation and
development of materials processes and product prototypes. Familiarity
with common materials properties, data acquisition software (e.g.,
Python, LabView), laboratory electronics and instrumentation, high
vacuum systems, cryogenics, and materials characterization methods is
ideal, as is understanding of microstructural properties of
high-performance metals, composites, and polymers.
Key Elements of the Position
- Variety of Projects. Work on several R&D projects at a time. Example
current/past project technology areas: electrostatic precipitation,
novel metals casting methods, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS),
thin film deposition, nanomaterials, chemical/biological protection
equipment, specialty coatings (thin-film, hydrophilic, wear
resistant, etc.), composites, and cryogenic systems and devices.
- Challenging and Interesting Work. Use your knowledge of materials
science, physics, chemistry, metallurgy, mechanics, heat transfer,
and mechanical design to develop fabrication processes and design,
build, and test experimental hardware, working prototypes, and
specialized products.
- Talented and Creative Colleagues. Team with other creative Engineers
and highly capable support staff (Designers/Drafters, Mechanical
Technicians, Precision Machinists). Project teams are small and
highly interdisciplinary.
- New England College Town. Our location in Hanover, New Hampshire
offers exceptional opportunities for the outdoor enthusiast,
excellence in schools and medical centers, and proximity to
Dartmouth College. Additionally, NH has no State sales or income
tax!
