Waste Connections Environmental Services Specialist in Harper, Kansas

We are looking to hire an Environmental Services Specialist to help manage the landfill gas recovery and renewable energy system and all other environmental systems at our Plumb Thicket Landfill near Harper, KS.

This position will also provide technical and field services support to other business units in the Great Plains Division (Kansas & Oklahoma). This individual will report directly to the Plumb Thicket District Manager and indirectly to the Region Engineer. A successful Environmental Services Specialist will be considered for advancement opportunities after 18 months of employment. Promotional opportunities may require relocation.

Total Compensation: $100K to $110K

Responsibilities include:

  • Oversee and direct renewable energy developer(s) to maximize gas capture and ensure developer’s performance pursuant to contract provisions, while also maximizing financial returns to Waste Connections.

  • Ensure all landfill gas collection and control system, leachate collection, and stormwater discharges remain in compliance with all Federal, State, and local laws and regulations.

  • Perform routine monitoring, inspections, and repairs on the landfill gas collection and control system, including pumps and other dewatering equipment.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with landfill employees, consultants, and gas developers.

  • Assist in landfill environmental reviews and audits.

  • Maintain electronic and onsite compliance reporting systems and field instruments.

  • Assist Region Engineer with planning and executing environmental and construction projects.

  • Provide technical and field support to other business units in the division.

  • Working outside in all weather conditions with the flexibility to be available when necessary to meet the objectives of the role and needs of the landfill.

The ideal candidate will be a self-directed individual who seeks accountability and is hard-working. He or she will possess an understanding of landfills gas collections systems and be able to follow established procedures with a minimal amount of direct supervision.

Minimum requirements:

  • Bachelor or Associate Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Environmental Sciences, or a related field preferred

  • Some direct work experience in two or more of the following areas:

  • landfill gas collection system and/or control devices (i.e. flares)

  • environmental site inspections, assessments, and/or remediation

  • environmental audits

  • gas processing, compression, and combustion equipment

  • construction quality assurance work on heavy civil or earthwork projects

  • water or wastewater treatment plant operations

  • stormwater and spill plan inspections
