POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER (COMPOSITE ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING) - ID# 224658.

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM), Ray Research Group, located in Honolulu, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

MONTHLY SALARY RANGE: $4,888 - $6,000/Mon.

DUTIES: Leads and performs research into the general topic of additive manufacturing processes to support the fabrication of hierarchical materials. This includes proposing the scope of work, planning work and resources; performing and supervising the work; designing and constructing necessary technical apparatus; preparation of budgets, parts lists, and bills of materials; procurement of supplies; and publishing results of these efforts. Writes and publishes a record of scholarly publications that result from efforts at literature review, research performed, and leadership/management of students in the research group. Manages a laboratory environment by supervising and maintaining smooth operation of the laboratory, creating and implementing organizational systems, communicating with vendors, working with the Research Corporation of the University of Hawaii (RCUH) and University staff to ensure timely placement of necessary orders and documentation, and developing and implementing safety compliance and training systems. Provides oversight, direction, and guidance for graduate and undergraduate students by establishing a productive and positive work environment. Serves as a mentor by providing an example of leadership and organization to the students. Contributes to preparation of research proposals, literature reviews, work plans, budgets, and related paperwork. Explores, proposes, and tests additional ideas that may be grown into new research as time and resources permit.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION

PhD or Sc.D. from an accredited college or university in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, or related science or engineering fields.

EXPERIENCE

One to three (1-3) years of scientific or engineering research experience, which may include research conducted concurrently with graduate education.

KNOWLEDGE

Strong scientific writing expertise and demonstrated record of scholarly publication in peer-reviewed journals. Proficient scientific/engineering research expertise. Knowledge of fabrication and characterization techniques associated with clean room processing. Knowledge in additive manufacturing processes in a research capacity with a particular emphasis on ink-based processes (direct ink writing), aerosol jet processing, or in development of novel print stock.

ABILITIES and SKILLS

Ability to perform literature reviews and use library resources. Excellent written and communication skills. Willingness to apply or learn necessary specialized software skills (e.g., Matlab, Labview, Comsol, L-Edit, etc.). Skills in mechanical design, mechanical design software (CAD/CAM), or fabrication of components. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to complete the UH Laboratory Safety training within six (6) months from date of hire. Must be able to complete the UH Information Security Awareness Training (ISAT) within two (2) weeks from date of hire, and re-certify every twelve (12) months.

PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to analyze and interpret visual/graphical data and design information. Must have the manual de terity to manipulate parts and benchtop experimental apparatus (up to ten (10) pounds in weight) for experiments.
