Position Title: QA/QC Certified Coatings Inspector Reports To: Quality Systems Manager

Position Summary: The QA/QC Certified Coatings Inspector will inspect coatings applied by coatings team members or subcontractors to ensure compliance with customer requirements, federal government, and NACE specifications. This position is also expected to keep abreast of and advise leadership of industry trends, standard changes, best practices, and equipment upgrades/improvements as necessary.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Apply SSPC, NACE, and NAVSEA standards as required
  • Assist the Coatings Superintendent, as required, to ensure all projects remain on schedule and sub-contractors adhere to PSI requirements
  • Provide oversight of coatings/painting activity
  • Visit worksites, QA checks on work in progress
  • Deliver paperwork and complete forms/reports as required
  • Apply standards to maximize customer satisfaction and time driven goals and eliminate re-work and missed deadlines/checkpoints
  • Establish priorities and meet deadlines
  • Engage with and train coatings team members to ensure a consistent and compliant product
  • Engage with customer representatives in a professional manner; anticipate customer needs and be prepared to deliver required items upon request or as stipulated by contract
  • Assist in preparing bids for painting/blasting work
  • Keep CS informed of current activity and future requirements
  • Train and certify personnel
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Education, Training and Experience:

  • 3-5 years in industrial coatings QC setting
  • Shipyard/ship repair/marine coatings experience a plus
  • NBPI, NACE CIP-1, or NACE CIP-2 Required
  • SSPC C7 and C14 certifications a plus
  • Knowledge of the marine industry and NAVSEA Standards
  • Proficient with Word and Excel scheduling software, i.e. MS Project

Working Conditions/Job Environment: This position requires working outside in the varying elements. A requirement for initial certification and re-certification(every five years) is required by a licensed physician or physician's assistant that verifies that the applicant is physically fit and free of debilitating illness and injury that could inhibit the ind vidual from effectively performing the duties of a Coatings Inspector. Examples of job environment are:

  • Working in extreme temperature (heat and cold) for extended periods exceeding one hour
  • Safely move about on slippery, sloping, uneven and unstable surfaces
  • Safely enter, move about within and egress cargo tanks, cargo holds and other confined spaces that may involve maneuvering over 6 ft (1.8 m) ship framing; climbing up and down 30 ft (9.1 m) vertical ladders and 80ft (24.3 m) stairways
  • Safely move between spaces and into/out of compartments on marine vessels that can involve stepping over a door threshold or coaming of 24 inches (61 cm) in height; moving through restricted openings or man holes of 24 inches by 24 inches (61 cm X 61 cm), crouching (lowering height by bending knees); kneeling (placing knees on ground); and stooping (lowering height by bending at the waist)
  • Manipulate mechanical devices using manual and digital dexterity, and strength to open and close watertight doors that may weigh up to 55 pounds (25 kg)
  • Perform visual inspections and surveys that can involve the use of hand tools such as spanners, valve wrenches, hammers, screwdrivers, pliers

Qualification/Requirements:

  • Must show proof of your legal right to work in the United States
  • This position requires US Citizenship due to security clearance required for base access
  • Must be able to successfully obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)
  • Must be able to successfully obtain a Defense Biometric Identification System (DBIDS) Credential to gain access to federally controlled work sites
  • All candidates must submit to and pass a post-offer drug screening and background check before employment begins. Failure to complete any of these steps will result in disqualification
  • Valid State of Hawaii drivers license in good standing, class 3 or higher
  • Candidates must have access to reliable transportation to get to work and other job sites on time for the start of shift
