Advanced Practice Provider (APRN/PA) - GI Radiation Oncology

Location: Main Campus - Texas Medical Center (TMC)

Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM

Ideal Candidate Qualifications:

  • Minimum of one year of experience as an APP in an inpatient setting or two years in an outpatient setting.

  • Oncology experience and/or Gastroenterology experience is preferred but not required.

  • Strong ability to work in a fast-paced environment while demonstrating high emotional intelligence and adaptability.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Assessment & Care

  • Conduct comprehensive initial and ongoing physical examinations based on patient diagnosis.

  • Identify normal/abnormal health characteristics and manage urgent patient care concerns.

  • Perform clinical assessments for patients without scheduled appointments and make appropriate referrals.

  • Assess and manage radiation-related side effects .

  • Partner with supervising physicians to develop radiation clinical treatment plans , monitor outcomes, and initiate appropriate care interventions.

Implementation & Collaboration

  • Order diagnostic tests and therapeutic procedures in accordance with institutional and state requirements.

  • Document and dictate consultation notes, follow-ups, and treatment summaries .

  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary healthcare team to optimize patient outcomes .

  • Participate in cancer survivorship monitoring and management.

Education & Professional Development

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of Radiation Oncology practice, clinical research, and protocols.

  • Serve as a clinical resource and educator for patients, families, and healthcare teams.

  • Precept new APPs during their orientation, providing guidance on clinical operations and best practices.

Communication & Documentation

  • Utilize strong interpersonal, verbal, and non-verbal communication skills to effectively manage patient care situations.

  • Ensure proper documentation of patient encounters, medication orders, and radiation prescriptions.

  • Act as a liaison and advocate for patients, families, and interdisciplinary team members.

EDUCATION:

Required: Master's degree from an accredited Physician Assistant (PA) program by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA), except for Physician Assistants who graduated from a PA program prior to 2013.

Required: Master's Degree in Nursing or Doctor of Nursing Practice. May be waived for applicants who obtained recognition as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse from the Texas State Board of Nursing prior to 1/1/2003. Graduate education and related Texas Board of Nursing authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population.

EXPERIENCE:

Required: None.

Preferred: A minimum of one year of clinical experience as an APP in an inpatient setting or a minimum of two years clinical experience in an outpatient setting. Radiation or oncologic background preferred but not required.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION:

Required: All of the following:

All of the following: PA certification by the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants. Licensed by the Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners.

MAY BE REQUIRED: Eligible to be granted limited prescriptive authority by the State of Texas. Must meet the American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS), ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) if working in one of following department: Pediatrics - Patient Care (113100).

Required:

All of the following: Written authorization from the Texas Board of Nursing to function as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN or ACNP or ACNPC or ACAGNP or AGACNP or ACNPC-AG or AGACNP or AGNP or ACPNP or ANP or AGNP or AGPCNP or FNP or GNP or PNP or PMHNP or WHNP or APNP). Related authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population. Basic Life Support (BLS). Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) If working in the following departments: Pediatric - Patient Care (113100).
