POSITION OVERVIEW

WORK LOCATION: 2999 SOUTH WAYSIDE DRIVE HOUSTON, TEXAS 77023*

WORKDAYS & HOURS: M- F, 6:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.*

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

This individual will perform administrative functions in the supervision, coordination and evaluation of semi-skilled in the maintenance and management of City grounds.

  • Perform horticultural duties such as planting new plants, irrigation, soil health, pest control/ disease management, pruning bushes, mowing grass, eradicating weeds, fertilization, and other tasks needed for general care and maintenance of planting areas.

  • Will assist in production and management of horticulture crop at city greenhouse.

  • The successful candidate will design, install, and maintain landscapes and Gardenscapes throughout City of Houston parks and other city facilities.

  • Develops and implements year-round production schedules.

  • Procures horticulture supplies and plant materials.

  • Oversee ground maintenance crews performing mowing of parks and greenspaces.

  • Plans, organizes, administers, and reviews work quality and staff productivity.

  • Recommends operational improvements to the supervisors and lead workers for implementation.

  • Investigates public service request when reviewing City rights-of-way and parks for general tree maintenance and hazard remediation.

  • Oversees various administrative functions, including maintenance, park inspections and review of departmental methods, procedures, and services.

  • Develops and recommends various administrative and educational marketing / research in planting, inventory, procurement/distribution plans and budget estimates.

  • Administers departmental policy and procedures relative to operational and personnel activities.

  • Maintains cooperative relationships with other department divisions and various City departments/agencies.

  • May handle special projects as requested and perform site checks after events pre and post.

  • Work hours are 6.30am to 3.30pm – weekend work is required including weekend rotation. Attend meetings in the afterhours as needed.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The position occasionally requires stooping or bending. Occasional very light lifting, such as three or four reams of papers or books (up to 20 pounds or an equivalent weight) may be required. There are occasional minor discomforts from exposure to less-than-optimal temperature and air conditions.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Requires an Associate's degree in Business Administration, Construction Management, Recreation or a closely related field.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Four years of progressively responsible professional and/or skilled experience closely related to the activities of the section are required, including one of the years in a supervisory experience.

Directly related professional experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.

LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

Must have a valid driver's license and comply with the City of Houston's policy on driving (AP 2-2).

PREFERENCES

Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.
