As an Amentum Space Exploration Division (ASED) intern, you will work alongside engineers and scientists on hardware development, payload integration & operations, laboratory & test operations, modeling & simulation, space environments, scientific research and propulsion systems for programs like Human Landing Systems, Space Launch Systems and the International Space Station!

Position Description

Provide systems engineering, requirements verification and validation (RV&V), Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), and other Digital Engineering (DE) support to the MSFC Systems Requirements, Verification & Validation Branch (EV72) for support to the Space Launch System (SLS).

The candidate will provide and perform the following tasks:

Work with the Requirements, Verification, & Validation (RV&V) Team to implement Systems Engineering management strategies using MBSE tools.

These implementations will facilitate management of key systems engineering products including requirements, traces, verifications, validations, and documents that support program/project milestones as these products mature. The successful candidate will work with the EV72 engineers, document owners, and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to develop solutions that meet our customers’ needs.

Expectations included in the ASED Internship:

  • You are expected to have a valid driver’s license, have access to an automobile, and be able to drive yourself to work locations.

  • NOTICE: As of May 7, your state-issued drivers’ license must be a Star License, since NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center is located on the Army’s Redstone Arsenal, a Federal installation.

  • You will be expected to attend MSFC facility scheduled tours, Technical Fellow talks, luncheons, and training sessions in addition to your work.

  • We highly encourage you to participate in activities outside of work with your fellow interns. These activities will be scheduled, with your input, by your social coordinators and will be beneficial in forming a cohesive group and lasting friendships.

Qualifications

Current enrollment in a BS degree program in Programming, Engineering or related field is required. Degree program from an ABET accredited institution preferred.

Must be able to provide own transportation

Candidate must be at least in their third year of a college program (Junior year) or equivalent.

The candidate is required to have:

  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).

  • Proficiency with Excel is required, and moderate programming background/classes.

  • Candidate is expected to be a self-motivated, team player familiar with working in a dynamic work environment.

  • Ability to breakdown complex problems or issues into manageable pieces to facilitate resolution of technical concerns.

  • Critical thinking, effective communications, and problem-solving skills.

  • Strong oral, written, interpersonal, customer relation skills, and presentation skills.

Desired skill sets (presence of one or more of these qualifications will be used as discriminating factors in selecting applicants):

  • Experience with database management. Other desired experience: MBSE tools such as

  • Doors Next Generation (DNG), Jira, Python, and MagicDraw.

  • Must have some level of knowledge of how to implement Systems Engineering principles utilizing MBSE tools.

  • Some experience with Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) desired.

Essential Functions

Work Environment:

Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%).

Physical Requirements:

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and our facilities (10%).

Equipment and Machines:

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance:

Normal workday 7:30-4:30, Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity, and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions:

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.

Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required.
