Electric-Groundman/Laborer, Temporary

The City of Idaho Falls is accepting applications for Temporary Groundman/Laborers for Idaho Falls Power/Idaho Falls

Fiber. This position, under the direction of a Line Crew Supervisor, Journey Line Worker, Journeyman Mechanic, or Fiber

Technicians performs supervised Groundman-level duties in the construction, maintenance, installation and repair of

electrical distribution, service lines, and fiber optic cable.

Essential Functions

Performs supervised Groundman-level duties in the construction, maintenance, installation, and repair of electrical

distribution, service lines, and fiber optic cable.

Operates heavy equipment such as backhoe, digger-derrick truck, puller\'s tensioners and other utility equipment.

Assists with trenching and installing of underground pipe or conduit, pulling wire, and other types of utility construction.

Safely maneuvers and climbs poles.

Understands the types and performs inspection of personal protective equipment.

Understands the proper use of rubber gloves while digging or exposing energized UG power lines and other potentially

hazardous facilities.

Understands the proper rigging of conductor, equipment, and loads to be lifted.

Performs traffic control, for crew and public safety, in and around the work areas.

Participate in job briefings/tailboard conferences prior to and during work assignments.

A. Graduation from High School or GED equivalent with experience in at least one of the following criteria: heavy

equipment operation; trenching for and installing underground pipe or conduit; pulling wire; or other types of utility

construction; OR B. Preference will be given to anyone who is enrolled or attended a line workers apprentice program, or

completion of a college or technical school program with an emphasis in line worker skills.

2. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Good common sense is a must. Self-motivated, team oriented, competent, hardworking, and safety minded.

Basic knowledge of Microsoft operating programs (i.e., Word, Excel, Outlook). Basic knowledge of electricity and its

properties. Knowledge of appropriate safety practices utilized while working with power lines and electrical equipment

regulations. Basic knowledge of OSHA, NESC and APPA, job procedure safety. Knowledge of appropriate safety practices

utilized while working with power lines and electrical equipment.

Ability to work effectively with crews; Ability to quickly solve problems. Ability to lift as required utility materials and tools,

up to 100 lbs; ability to work outdoors in all types of weather; ability to follow utility safety procedures and practices; ability

to skillfully use hand tools or machines as necessary. Ability to communicate verbally and in written form.

3. Special Qualifications:

Must pass a pre-employment drug test and physical and background check.

Must possess a valid Idaho Class A Commercial Driver\'s License.

Pole Top Rescue Certified preferred. May certify within the 90 days of employment.

Work Environment

Incumbents of the position perform normally in an outdoor, physical environment. Tasks require variety of physical activities

involving muscular strain, related to walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching and lifting (50 lbs). Essential functions

require talking, hearing and seeing. Common and complex eye, hand, finger dexterity exist. Mental application utilizes

memory for details, verbal instructio s, emotional stability, discriminating thinking and creative problem solving. Daily travel

required in normal course of job performance. Regular exposure to changing weather conditions and hazards common to

high voltage electrical system.
