Job Purpose and Objectives:Bailiff performs duties according to
established practices and procedures of the Court with priorities
primarily determined by supervisor and service needs of the public.
Assignments are guided by broad policies and/or general objectives, with
incumbent referring to supervisor when interpretations of departmental
policies or expenditures are thought necessary. Court Bailiffs in the
14th Judicial District will be required to stand for long periods of
time. Bailiff will assist with handling inmates at times when an issue
arises. They are also expected to assist the judge in carrying out any
lawful orders of the court. During Jury Trials they will be expected to
climb some stairs while escorting the jury members to and from the court
room. They will provide basic courtroom security including but not
limited to searches of the court room, searching the jury rooms and
bathrooms, and providing lethal cover for the court staff in the event a
situation arises that requires lethal force. Bailiff will be armed and
must qualify with a handgun.
Essential Duties:
- Communicates with Jail staff regarding transportation of inmates for
Criminal Court.
- Oversees jury deliberations, issuing instructions and ensuring juror
welfare and compliance with proper Court procedures.
- Serves as liaison between jurors and Judge, relaying information and
inquiries as requested.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
