Definition and Duties

Under general supervision of the County Attorney, participates in complex criminal and civil investigations. Conduct investigations of both criminal and civil nature at County Attorney's request. Locate and interview victims and witnesses, gather restitution information, serves subpoenas and other court related documents, and assists attorneys in trial preparation.

Knowledge of and Ability to
  • Police and court procedures.
  • Federal, state and local laws/regulations as they pertain criminal and civil nature
  • The legal system involving both criminal and civil issues.
  • Interviewing and investigative procedures
  • Considerable knowledge of police, administrative and investigative procedures
  • Techniques used in collection and preservation of evidence
  • English language to include grammar, spelling, sentence structure and vocabulary; and proofreading skills

Skill/Ability to:

  • Develop and use various sources for gathering necessary information and data
  • Perform assigned tasks without immediate supervision
  • Establish and maintain relationships with and cooperate with various agencies including both law enforcement and civil authorities

Minimum Education, Training and Experience and Special Requirements

Associate degree in related field AND three (3) years of advanced investigative experience in the criminal field required; or an equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Extensive course work and certification in police administration, supervision, and investigation from recognized law enforcement academy preferred.

Special requirements: Must pass background check. Valid drivers license and insurable under county liability coverage. May also require use of private vehicle or equivalent transportation for official business.

Specific Duties

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Conducts civil and criminal investigative assignments, determine what witnesses should be interv ewed, interviews clients and witnesses sand obtains detailed evidence in cases filed
  • Processes videos and photographs for evidentiary and court purposes, edits and prepares exhibits as directed
  • Provides technological assistance to office staff and assists with courtroom technology as needed
  • Reviews jail list reports prepares for initial appearances including running Criminal History reports
  • Gathers and analyzes information obtained from field investigations, and interviews with victims and witnesses
  • Direct an investigative team coordinating and assigning tasks and evaluating case progress. Ensures proper collection and preservation of evidence;
  • Assists attorneys with preparation of cases , attends court and provides testimony
  • Locates victims and witnesses, serves legal notices such as subpoenas and warrants/ Secures arrest warrants.
  • May maintain on call status for duty in case of a special need or emergency.
  • Prepares reports on investigative findings
  • Performs related duties as required
  • Coordinates the creation of necessary marketing/outreach materials including those used to
  • Attend work-related meetings, conferences, and seminars.
  • Perform work duties and activities in accordance with County policies, procedures, and safety practices.
