Hourly Outreach, Inclusion and Adaptive Recreation Program Job Openings
The City of Iowa City Recreation Division is accepting applications for positions within the Hourly
Outreach, Inclusion and Adaptive Recreation program. Staff assignments may include one or more
of the following positions:
Program Instructor - Inclusive and Adaptive Recreation
15.00 per hour
Definition of Work: Leads, organizes and directs recreation activities in support of the inclusive and
adaptive program area. Skill levels greatly vary within programs; thus the program leader is
required to adapt activities to meet individual capabilities. Actively facilitates structured lessons
that can cover a wide variety of content areas that include, but is not limited to: STEAM, arts and
crafts, cooking and baking, sports, games, social events, outdoor/ nature and cultural competency.
Must be flexible and able to adapt to program and participant changes and needs. Assists with
special events when necessary. Conducts self in a manner which promotes and supports diversity
and inclusivity in the workplace and community. Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: Previous experience in leading recreation programs or teaching skills to
persons with special needs and diverse backgrounds preferred. Experience and/ or knowledge in
STEAM, arts and crafts, cooking and baking, sports, games, social events, outdoor/ nature, and/ or
cultural competency is highly preferred. Please specify any specialized areas of expertise on
application. Must pass criminal background check.
Hours of Operation: Year-round position with varied schedule that can include mornings,
afternoons, evenings and weekends.
Program Instructor Recreation Outreach
15.00 per hour
Definition of Work: Leads recreation activities in support of the outreach program area. This
includes the operation of teen programs, initiatives and events. One primary responsibility
includes leading the afterschool and summer Teen Dynamics program. Provides leadership and
implementation of youth and teen activities, ensuring that program participants receive a quality
experience in a safe environment. Programs include formal and informal recreation activities that
focus on enhancing community engagement, healthy living and social responsibility including, but
not limited to: music, arts and crafts, sports, leisure activities and special events. Must be flexible
and able to adapt to program and participant changes and needs. Effectively interacts with and
supervises youth and teens participating in the programs. Communicates program information,
problems, and concerns to parents/ guardians, participants and program area leadership. Assists
with community outreach to underserved individuals. Assists with special events when necessary.

Program Coordinator Recreation Outreach
16.00 per hour
Definition of Work: Plans, organizes and directs recreation activities in support of the outreach
program area. This includes the operation of teen programs, initiatives and events. One primary
responsibility includes leading the afterschool and summer Teen Dynamics program. Helps
develop program content for teens (ages 10-17) among other c mmunity outreach opportunities.
Programs will help foster positive self-identify, educational, social, emotional and cultural
competencies. Program content may include music, arts and crafts, sports, leisure activities and
special events. Conducts outreach and recruitment programs to connect with underserved teen
youth. Maintains contact with external community groups, participant parents, and others to
create strong working relationships that help promote the effectiveness of teen programs.
Provides a healthy and safe environment while ensuring that facilities, equipment and supplies are
well-maintained. Assists with special events when necessary. Conducts self in a manner that
promotes and supports diversity and inclusivity within the workplace and community. Performs
other duties as assigned.
