Position Overview

Located in Ithaca, New York, and reporting directly to the Executive Vice President & Chief Financial Officer, the VP/CFO Ithaca plays a pivotal role in ensuring the effective allocation of our university's financial resources in alignment with our mission and strategic objectives. The VP/CFO Ithaca provides critical leadership and oversight to a large complex division of approximately 200 employees on our Ithaca campus in the areas of Asset Management & Analytical Services, Office of the University Controller (including tax, payroll, financial transaction center, financial systems and information delivery, general accounting, sponsored financial services, procurement, and contract management), Risk Management and Insurance, Student Health Plan, Treasury Services, and Real Estate Services. These areas also include bursar, cash management, debt, public private partnerships, and financial analytic functions. The VP/CFO Ithaca works across the enterprise to optimize the university's decision-making capabilities and inspires the highest standards of financial performance.


Key Responsibilities

In this role you will

  • Provide strategic and collaborative financial leadership and guidance to diverse units across the Ithaca campus.
  • Serve as a resident expert, advising senior management and trustees on financial management issues within higher education.
  • Collaborate with the EVP to optimize the financial capabilities and structure of our university.
  • Partner with the VP of Budget and Planning for financial planning and budgeting, developing models and forecasting long-term financial projections, and ensuring compliance with University, Federal, and State regulations.
  • Forge strong partnerships with financial management leadership at Weill Cornell Medicine and Cornell Tech for initiatives including capital planning, debt management, investment of financial assets, public private partnerships, risk management and insurance, and student health plan.
  • Develop and implement University-wide accounting and financial policies and procedures and contribute to the development of university policies in various functional areas.
  • Oversee financial administrative systems and internal control requirements to ensure proper recording in compliance with GAAP and all applicable laws, policies, and donor requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with state and federal financial regulations and develop risk management strategies to protect university assets against risk of financial loss.
  • Evaluate economic /social forces and government influences; interpret / forecast potential impact upon the organization's financial performance.
  • Interact with federal auditors and external regulatory agencies for negotiations and compliance.
  • Foster professional relationships within the higher education finance community.
  • Support diversity, belonging, and inclusion initiatives within the division.
  • Serve as the primary backup to the EVP.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of ten years of related professional finance experience that demonstrates progressive responsibility in strategic financial leadership (funding & structuring, financial accounting, analysis and risk management, internal controls) preferably within a university setting.
  • Advanced degree in accounting or business-related field; CPA and/or MBA highly desirable.
  • Prior CFO experience, experience in leading risk and insurance programs, and student health plans highly desired.
  • Proven track record of implementing creative financial strategies, promoting change, and engaging stakeholders in planning, decision making, and modeling.
  • Must have executive presence and possess advanced interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to work and interact effectively and collaboratively with a diversity of individuals representing a broad range of skills and experiences, and the ability to build coalitions and inter-functional teams to leverage synergistic relationships.
  • High level of integrity, diplomacy, professionalism, strategic leadership, negotiating, and organizational team building capability, with ability to proactively identify potential problems and develop alternative solutions to the challenges of managing a diverse portfolio.
  • Demonstrated innovative, entrepreneurial, and collegial leadership style, commitment to higher education, and openness to information.
  • Ability to promote and sustain an engaged and high-performing environment.
  • Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision and exercise discretion and sound judgment.

Rewards and Benefits

The anticipated annual salary range for this position is $500,000 to $575,000. Final determination of a successful candidate's starting salary is based on education, relevant experience, and unique applicable skills.
