Brick / Block Mason Job Duties
The primary responsibility of a mason is to use their abilities and experience as a highly skilled
craftsman to construct all facets of masonry meeting the expected production rates,
maintaining the expected quality standards, utilizing the safest approach, and in aiding the
team to succeed. The position of a mason is a very physically demanding occupation.
Installing the required number of units
Ordering cuts and special items well in advance of when needed.
Being on the wall and ready to lay at the start of the day and after each break.
Knowing and adhering to industry and standards.
Knowing and/or obtaining the benchmarks to maintain proper heights and meeting those
benchmarks.
Knowing and/or obtaining the standards for tooling on the project for each area, joint, and
material and meeting those standards while making sure they are consistent with the other
masons on the project.
Never leave tags (mortar snags from tooling)
Pay extra attention to tooling inside corners
Maintain even head joints, clean straight bed joints, and never accept improper cuts.
Maintain all surfaces within all plumb and level tolerances and keep the surfaces of the material
uniform for its type.
Repetitive turning at the waist, bending at the waist, squatting, stooping, stretching, kneeling,
gripping, wrist movement, elbow movement, shoulder movement, etc.
Repetitive lifting of objects and/or material weighing up to 35 lbs, frequent lifting of objects
and/or material weighing up to 70 lbs, and occasional lifting of objects and/or material weighing
over 70 lbs.(Very frequent lifting over the head and below the knees).
Climbing ladders to reach work platforms of varying heights.
Maintaining uncomfortable or awkward body positions for extended periods.
Working in varied and often extreme weather conditions.
Working on scaffolding and/or in high exposed places.
Verbally communicating (both speech and hearing).
Must have verifiable experience as a journeyman brick/ block mason
