Burns & McDonnell Electrical Section Manager – Early Careers - Power (Kansas City) in Kansas City, Missouri

This position is responsible for assisting the Electrical Department Manager by providing direction, leadership, and technical guidance to the Assistant level engineers in the Electrical Department within the Power Global Practice. This position will provide managerial direction to the Assistant level electrical engineers in the Electrical Department and reports to the Electrical Department Manager. This position is anticipated to require approximately 20% time to perform the duties defined below and allow the Electrical Section Manager to maintain 80% billability.

Areas of responsibility include general roles supporting the overall Electrical Department and specific roles relative to assisting with the goals of the Power Division, the career development of the engineering staff within the department, and other duties assigned by the Department Manager. These duties include, but may not be limited to, the following:

  • Advocate for safety in the department.

  • Recruit candidates that align with MacCulture principles, department needs, growth strategies and business objectives

  • Establish and proactively communicate to staff the vision, expectations, requirements, processes, and guidelines to meet departmental, global practice, and company objectives

  • Drive culture of quality and continual improvement.

  • Coordinate team and mentor assignments of department staff with electrical department managers and project managers/engineers to ensure the efficient, cost-effective utilization of staff.

  • Advocate for staff by meeting regularly, listening to their short-and long-term goals and providing guidance, direction, and facilitation of opportunities to meet those goals.

  • Work with Human Resources and staff to identify, prepare, communicate, and monitor performance plans for employees with areas of needed improvement.

  • Review employee performance and conduct development meetings (90 day and annual performance appraisals, mid-year reviews, coaching sessions, etc.).

  • Identify training needs for the department and support/develop training programs with a focus on early career development.

  • Interpret policies, purposes, and goals of organization to staff.

  • Approve timecards and maintain billable time.

  • Demonstrate creativity, foresight, and mature judgment in anticipating and solving problems.

  • Assist and / or drive the development of tools to support the automation of engineering deliverables that promote efficiency and accuracy of construction and startup.

  • Other responsibilities as defined by Department and Division Management.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or electrical engineering from accredited program.

  • Minimum 5 years related professional experience in engineering design.

  • Strong preference for the following:

  • Burns & McDonnell recruiting experience.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees and management.

  • Experience giving and receiving performance feedback for those they work with.

  • Familiarity with tools/technology such as Data Models, Office 365 apps, ETAP, SKM, SmartPlant and other efficiency/data tracking tools.

  • Ability to thoughtfully and positively influence, lead, and manage change.

  • History of high performance as demonstrated and documented in the Burns & McDonnell performance management system.

  • Position requires 10-25% travel.
