JOB REQUIREMENTS: Patrol assigned area to enforce laws and ordinances,
regulate traffic, control crowds, prevent crime, and arrest violators.
This is an entry level law enforcement position with responsibilities
including working as a team member to enforce laws, maintaining the
public peace, protecting life and property and working with the
community to address community problems. Incumbents in this position
patrol assigned areas, respond to criminal, suspicious, traffic and
unusual situations as directed, investigate activities, gather evidence,
secure areas, protect victims, the public and property, apprehend
violators, complete appropriate paperwork, and perform other related
duties as required. Duties are performed under general supervision of
the on-duty supervisor or shift commander. Direct traffic flow and
reroute traffic in case of emergencies. Identify, pursue, and arrest
suspects and perpetrators of criminal acts. Inform citizens of community
services and recommend options to facilitate longer-term problem
resolution. Inspect public establishments to ensure compliance with
rules and regulations. Investigate traffic accidents and other accidents
to determine causes and to determine if a crime has been committed.
Issue citations or warnings to violators of motor vehicle ordinances.
Monitor traffic to ensure motorists observe traffic regulations and
exhibit safe driving procedures. Monitor, note, report, and investigate
suspicious persons and situations, safety hazards, and unusual or
illegal activity in patrol area. Patrol specific area on foot,
horseback, or motorized conveyance, responding promptly to calls for
assistance. Photograph or draw diagrams of crime or accident scenes and
interview principals and eyewitnesses. Provide for public safety by
maintaining order, responding to emergencies, protecting people and
property, enforcing motor vehicle and criminal laws, and promoting good
community relations. Provide road information to assist motorists.
Record facts to prepare reports that document incidents and activities.
Relay complaint and emergency-request information to appropriate agency
dispatchers. Review facts of incidents to determine if criminal act or
statute violations were involved. Testify in court to present evidence
or act as witness in traffic and criminal cases. ***** OTHER
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS: The La Crosse Police Department
incorporates a community policing philosophy; accordingly, applicants
should possess strong human relations, problem solving, and
