Huntington National Bank Employee Relations Consultant Sr in Lansing, Michigan


Hybrid role, this will support Retail banking in MI. Some travel could be required.

It is the responsibility of the Employee Relations Consultant Sr. to provide advice and counsel to managers and employees in the detection and resolution of issues that impact individual or organizational performance

Job Duties:

  • Provide advice and counsel to managers and supervisors in improving colleague performance and administering discipline in a consistent approach and in accordance with Huntington’s policies and practices, as well as applicable state and federal laws.

  • Counsel managers and colleagues to foster communication and maintain effective working relationships and a positive work environment.

  • Participate in the effective and timely resolution of employee relations issues of varying complexity, which may include investigations, employee disciplinary action and other issues representing significant risk to the organization.

  • Coordinate and participate in the corrective action process, which may include advising managers, assisting in the creation and review of written documents, participating in the delivery of the discipline and maintaining applicable reporting and records.

  • Work collaboratively with Case Managers to effectively transition/escalate employee relations matters requiring further investigation, including but not limited to wrongful conduct, allegations of harassment, discrimination, and retaliation.

  • Participate in interactive discussions with colleagues who have accommodation requests to determine if a reasonable accommodation can be made.

  • Conduct thorough fact finding to provide necessary context to resolve disputes.

  • Ensure detailed and timely documentation of all employee relation matters using Huntington’s case management system.

  • Communicate effectively with colleagues during investigations and decision makers in all employee relations matters.

  • Collaborate with legal counsel on issue resolution and/or litigation preparation to ensure risk mitigation and consistent application across the Bank.

  • Review colleague exit survey data and follow up with former colleague to attain additional information when necessary.

  • May assist in the development, implementation and delivery of employee relations related training, ensuring managers have the skills and tools to effectively handle employee relations matters.

  • Provide recommendations on policies and procedures that support a positive work experience.

  • Identify emerging workforce issues and best practices to establish robust HR response to internal/external risks.

  • Provide support in reductions in force and other HCM strategic initiatives.

  • Partner with Human Resource Business Partners to identify trends, provide insight and make recommendations on issues impacting employee retention and engagement.

  • Apply an understanding and perform all work in compliance with relevant company policies as well as pertinent federal, state and local laws.

  • Function in a high-volume environment where effective prioritization is crucial to success.

  • Other duties as projects as requested.


  • Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business or related field of study or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • In lieu of a Bachelor’s Degree, a High School Diploma and an additional 4 years of experience will be required (total 7 years of Employee Relations or Human Resource experience)

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in Employee Relations or related HR discipline, which includes experience enforcing state and federal labor, wage and hour laws.

  • Experience supporting a large client base preferred.

  • Professional HR certification preferred (SHRM-CP/PHR).

  • Employee Relations experience in a Retail and/or Financial Services environment is a plus.


  • Solid background and knowledge of federal, state, and local employment laws and practices.

  • Broad knowledge base and experience in analyzing employee relations matters of varying levels of complexity and conducting internal investigations through resolution.

  • Strong investigatory skills with the ability to effectively resolve and mediate conflict.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to deliver effective communication (verbal and written) proactively with a customer-oriented approach, while maintaining credible relationships at all levels of the organization.

  • Excellent negotiation and closing skills and the ability to build relationships built on ethics and integrity.

  • Proven ability to exercise discretion and maintain an exceptional level of confidentiality, utilizing sound judgment when dealing with sensitive issues.

  • Exceptional attention to detail, organization and time management skills, with the ability to work under restrictions/deadlines.

  • Strong analytical ability and proven problem-solving skills required.

  • Proven experience taking initiative to identify and anticipate colleague needs and make recommendations.

  • Ability to stay objective and fair when dealing with sensitive situations.

  • Change agility, influencing and conflict management skills are critical.

  • Ability to be self-directed and able to work on multiple priorities with minimal supervision and a sense of urgency.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office application; experience with human resource information and case management systems preferred.
