Thermo Fisher Scientific – The Lengnau site is part of the Drug Substance Division, a dynamic and fast-growing CDMO (Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization). Our mission is to deliver high-quality solutions to clients and patients. The site is expanding engineering and automation support for GMP clean utility systems.

This is a full-time, on-site role based in Lengnau, Switzerland.

Position Purpose

The Senior Automation Engineer ensures clean utility automation systems operate efficiently, safely, and meet GMP standards. These systems include Water for Injection (WFI), Purified Water (PW), Clean Steam, and process gases.

The role supports daily operations, solves technical issues, and monitors performance. It includes work on investigations, change controls, CAPAs, and documentation. Collaboration with QA, Facilities, and Engineering is key. The position may also support minor system improvement projects.

Position Responsibilities & Accountabilities

Technical Responsibilities

  • Operate, support, and maintain GMP clean utility systems (WFI, PW, Clean Steam, gases).

  • Act as system engineer for Siemens TIA Portal (S7), Siemens BMS, SCADA, and FMS platforms such as Mirrhia.

  • Complete investigations and resolve automation issues efficiently.

  • Create and maintain TrackWise records, including deviations, change controls, and CAPAs.

  • Write and review documentation such as URS, FDS, and FS protocols.

  • Participate in the on-call rotation to support systems after hours.

  • Maintain accurate documentation, including SOPs and system backups.

  • Apply approved system updates and support smaller automation projects.

  • Collaborate with multi-functional teams to ensure cGMP and audit alignment.

  • Recommend improvements to boost system reliability and performance.

Position Qualifications

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Automation Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field—or equivalent experience.

Experience & Skills

  • At least 5 years of automation engineering experience in a GMP-regulated environment.

  • Hands-on experience with TIA Portal, SCADA, BMS, and FMS.

  • Familiarity with PCS7, virtualization, or industrial networking is a plus.

  • Understanding of GMP rules, data integrity, and system validation.

  • Experience with Quality records.

  • Good problem solving skills and attention to detail.

  • Proficient in English; German is helpful but not required.

  • On Call is Required

  • Able to perform physical tasks like standing, walking, or lifting as needed.
