MIT Lincoln Laboratory Engineer - Space Systems in Lexington, Massachusetts

The Advanced Electro-Optical Systems Group specializes in the rapid design and prototyping of innovative electro-optic systems that address challenges facing the Department of Defense, NASA, and other U.S. government entities. The group maintains broad expertise in satellite systems, electro-optical and infrared sensors, charge-coupled devices, electronics, image processing, and low–size/weight/power optical communications systems. The vertically-integrated group leverages this core expertise to architect, design, prototype, and deploy hardware and software systems in support of mission needs. Emphasis is on working closely with end users to develop enabling concepts, then building and fielding integrated systems on responsive timelines. The group seeks self-motivated engineers and scientists with multidisciplinary skill sets and a passion for prototyping systems that address critical national needs.

Job Description

The Advanced Electro-Optical Systems Group seeks a space-systems engineer to join our vertically-integrated team. The employee will have the opportunity to collaborate with a multi-disciplinary group of optical, mechanical, and electrical engineers to design, prototype, and deploy high-integrated electro-optic systems for use terrestrially and in space. The candidate should be self-motivated, with a demonstrated capability to collaborate across multi-disciplinary teams and to autonomously identify and solve problems.

Over the course of a career the applicant can expect to perform multiple roles, including but not limited to orbit modeling, image processing for feature extraction, optical system characterization, sensor characterization, and satellite hardware design. As expertise grows, the applicant’s role will expand to include concept development, team leadership, and presentation of results both internally and to external sponsors.

Multiple roles will require the applicant to develop expertise across multiple technical domains, to include orbital dynamics, space hardware, EO sensors, optics, control theory, and statistics. The successful applicant should have current expertise in at least one of these domains, the ability to and enthusiasm for learning new technical domains quickly, and experience with physics-based software modeling.

The collaborative nature of the role requires the successful applicant to work fully on-site.

Requirements

This candidates must have a PhD in physics, mathematics, astronautics, or related field. A Master's degree with 3 years of experience will also be considered. US Citizenship is a requirement.

Candidates with expertise in orbital dynamics, space hardware, optics, electro-optic systems, statistics, sensor physics, and software such as C/C++, Python, Matlab, Julia, and Rust will stand out.
