MIT Lincoln Laboratory Spring 2024 - Aerospace Metal Composites for 3D Printing Co-op in Lexington, Massachusetts

The Structural & Thermal-Fluids Engineering Group provides innovative multidisciplinary engineering solutions for underwater, ground, air, and space-based prototype systems for national security applications. Examples include the development of structural-material systems for space-based imaging and laser communication terminals, thermal management for high energy laser systems and RF solid-state devices, and aerodynamic designs and multifunctional materials for airborne sensors, hypersonic platforms, and unmanned aerial vehicles. Engineering solutions are developed through the utilization of appropriate technologies coupled with high-fidelity models and multidisciplinary simulations, environmental and performance characterization testing, and the utilization and development of advanced materials to optimize solutions to meet ever increasing performance, size, weight, and environmental challenges.

Job Description

The group seeks a spring 2024 undergraduate or graduate co-op student to join a research program working to invent stiff, strong, and lightweight aerospace metals for 3D printing by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF). The project entails fabrication of metal-ceramic powders, laser consolidation of these composite powders with LPBF, and characterization of both powders and printed materials with microscopy, mechanical testing, and other methods. Although the focus of the project is experimental, you will use modeling and theory to plan and interpret experiments. Programming of build files and the 3D printer may also be involved (Netfabb).

Requirements

  • Presently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate engineering program, with a major in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Civil Engineering, or Materials Science

  • Classes in materials science and solid mechanics

  • Strong interest in conducting experimental materials research

  • Experience with metallography, scanning electron microscopy, light microscopy, mechanical testing, or other materials characterization would be very helpful, but we will train highly motivated and qualified students

  • Experience with MATLAB, Mathematica, Python, LaTeX, or similar programming languages

  • Start date: January 2024

    Selected candidate will be subject to a pre-employment background investigation and must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret level DoD security clearance.
