JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for the general maintenance and repair of
Detention
facility.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Inspects the building daily to determine needed repairs to the building
structure.
Makes repairs from work orders generated by a supervisor, inmate,
Sheriffs
Department staff, and other maintenance personnel.
Repairs and/or replaces lights, light fixtures, parking lot lights,
locks, door knobs,
etc.
Assists in the electrical wiring of outlets, moving electrical outlets,
and re-wiring
lighting systems.
Assists in the inspection of the air conditioning and heating unit;
replace parts or
services as directed.
Assists in the repair and rebuilding of the key locks.
Welds brackets for inmates beds, television sets, and other objects
ensuring
objects/furniture in inmates cells and pods are immobile.
Drills through concrete floors to repair sewer, gas, and water lines;
refills holes
with concrete and re-tiles floors.
Assists in the repair and installation of plumbing fixtures as directed.
Repairs structural damage due to shifting jail facility by repairing
walls with
sheetrock, etc.
Constructs new wall additions, re-vent ducts for ventilation in new
offices, etc.
Maintains equipment in kitchen areas; replaces and cleans burners.
Responds to jail maintenance calls 24 hours a day.
SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Performs other related duties as required.
PERSONNEL SUPERVISED: None
WORKING CONDITIONS: Duties are performed within the assigned County
facility. Performs work with or near moving or mechanical parts and
electrical parts and
wiring. Occasional travel to other County facilities is required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES:
o Considerable knowledge of general building maintenance techniques and
practices.
o Good knowledge of general construction work.
o Ability to understand oral and written instructions.
o Ability to read blueprints.
o Ability to work in close confinement with inmates.
o Ability to climb ladders to make inspections and repairs.
o Ability to assemble and dissemble parts.
o Ability to lift and carry loads up to 100 pounds up and down stairs.
o Ability to work in a bent or kneeling position for extended periods of
time.
o Ability to negotiate cramped spaces.
o Ability to work a rotating shift.
o Ability to remain on call 24 hours a day.
o Skill in the use of carpentry tools.
o Skill in the use of a jackhammer.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
o Ability to climb ladders.
o Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
o Ability to negotiate cramped spaces.
o Digital dexterity is necessary for equipment operation and tool usage.
o Visual acuity is needed for building inspection and equipment and tool
usage.
o Ability to effectively communicate orally.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Completion of high school or GED equivalency; completion of vocational
training in
building construction, building maintenance, or a related area;
considerable experience
