Los Alamos National Laboratory Engineering Technologist 2/3 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Engineering Technologist 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Engineering Leadership Council (ELC) is a broad group of individuals focused on fostering, assuring, and championing engineering capabilities at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). Through development of an engineering enterprise strategy last year, the ELC is growing and cultivating engineering at LANL through and Engineering Innovation Hub where individuals can come and build three-dimensional models of innovative engineering ideas. In addition, the Engineering Institute (EI) has a laboratory of both light electronic and mechanical equipment that is used for both the Los Alamos Dynamic Summer School (LADSS) and the Judicial Science School (JSS) that needs to be maintained and used for engineering measurements. This position will be a collaborative role between the ELC and the EI to be the Person-In-Charge (PIC) for the EI laboratory containing Innovation Hub, maintaining and installing equipment as appropriate, and assisting users on a frequent basis.

Engineering Technologist 2 $92,300 - $151,000

As an Engineering Technologist, you will act as the lead contact for the EI laboratory, maintaining equipment and paperwork necessary for the laboratory to run smoothly and to grow in capability. The position requires using the principles and theories of engineering, math and science to solve technical problems in support of engineering and engineering research. In particular, some of the functionalities include:

  • Assures safety and security compliance and establishes integrated work documents and processes for safe operations in the laboratory.

  • Applies principles, theories, concepts and techniques within engineering to perform work.

  • Resolves a wide range of issues in creative ways. Provides resolutions to a diverse range of complex problems where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors.

  • Contributes to the development of EI and ELC goals and objectives.

  • Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions to work that needs to be performed in the laboratory.

  • Contributes to the planning, coordination, and preparation of equipment or work specifications, bid evaluations, and award recommendations for equipment.

  • Applies working knowledge of the principles and theories of engineering, mathematics and science to solve routine technical problems in the EI and ELC, including performing complex calculations and analyses in support of design engineering.

  • Performs computer-related activities, such as preparing input data and using computer programs for computerized solution of technical problems, including the use of computer-aided design (CAD) systems for drawing preparation.

  • Applies knowledge of the principles and theories of engineering, mathematics and science to solve routine technical problems in the laboratory.

Engineering Technologist 3 $101,700 - $168,200

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level the Engineering Technologist 3 performs the following duties:

  • Plans and schedules detailed phases of engineering work for the EI laboratory. Performs work that involves conventional engineering to resolve issues, including complex features and/or conflicting design requirements.

  • Applies expert knowledge of the principles and theories of engineering, mathematics and science to solve routine technical problems in the laboratory.

  • Coordinates engineering efforts in areas between assigned tasks and individuals with innovative ideas.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Ability to articulate concepts through various oral and written communication media, using a diverse range of technical and business acumen.

  • Ability to apply critical thinking in complex problem solving, present options, and make recommendations.

  • Working knowledge of computer-aided drafting techniques, CAD modeling and design.

  • Sound knowledge of mathematical formulas and computations and data gathering methods.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, and Excel), and Adobe Acrobat.

  • Proficient in engineering work planning and control methods.

  • Proficient in engineering principles and basic technical responsibilities.

Additional Job Requirements for Engineering Technologist 3:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • Expert knowledge of engineering work planning and control methods.

  • Expert knowledge of engineering principles and basic technical responsibilities.

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree and 5 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree and 8 years of directly related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience or certifications in a field related to maker space implementation (i.e. laser cutter, three-dimensional printers (3D) or machine tools) or structures/systems/components design development or support.

  • Experience in DOE/NNSA nonreactor nuclear facilities and radiological facilities or projects.

  • Advanced degree in relevant field.

  • Experience in producing designs and prototypes utilizing AutoCAD, Solidworks, or Cameo tools and work processes.

  • Knowledge of DOE O 413.B-Program and/or LANL Engineering Standards and Conduct of Engineering principals, policies, procedures, and standards.

  • Knowledge of industry, regulatory, or DOE/NNSA Complex codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to LANL light laboratory space.

Work Environment:

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances.
