What is the primary need, technical challenge, and/or problem you will be responsible for?

You will be a part of the Tanzu Kubernetes Grid team. As an engineer on this team, you will be contributing to the upstream Kubernetes project in areas related to Special Interest Group (SIG) Cluster Lifecycle, with a focus on Cluster API. The focus of this role is also to ultimately grow up the contributor ladder into more influential positions in the upstream Kubernetes project.

Success in the Role: What are the performance goals over the first 6-12 months, you will work toward completing?

You will be expected to:

  • Contribute and review code for all aspects of Cluster API: clusterctl (cli), operator, node agent, our APIs (custom resource definitions), conversion webhooks, kubeadm, control plane lifecycle and all the infrastructure providers.

  • Review code involving changes to APIs, testing and documentation, shepherd APIs through their lifecycle, and new features.

  • Level up testing apparatus and coverage across the board, including helping Cluster API to become the tool used for Kubernetes testing each release.

  • Contribute to projects that Cluster API depends upon like controller-runtime, kubeadm etc.

  • Write Cluster API Enhancement Proposals (CAEPs), participate in community meetings and mentor other contributors.

What type of work will you be doing? What assignments or requirements will you be performing on a regular basis?

On a regular basis, you will

  • Design and implement features, triage, review and respond to incoming issues and pull requests, ensure high code quality and correctness through testing and factoring, and maintain documentation, release notes, etc for SIG Cluster Lifecyle and all of Cluster API related areas.

  • Participate in community discussions in the Kubernetes slack, mailing lists and meetings.

  • Collaborate in upstream and internal architecture planning and design meetings.

  • Collaborate with internal teams to solve issues involving Cluster Lifecycle.

  • Publicly discuss relevant topics through presentations, blog posts, webinars, etc.

  • Mentor, provide direction and guidance to junior engineers and new contributors to the project.

  • Work in a distributed team across multiple geographical locations.

The hiring manager for this role is Clint Kitson, R&D Director. Clint has been in the cloud native ecosystem for 5+ years and helped build, coordinate, and grow VMware’s Kubernetes contributor and product teams. Clint’s team is responsible for delivering TKG and building teams that innovate with global communities to further the customer readiness of Kubernetes.
