Director Global Outbound Transportation (m/f/d)


In this position, the Director Outbound Management is responsible for developing a global and forward oriented outbound logistics strategy while considering local and regional diversity. He/she will be responsible for driving continuous improvement with a focus on improving on-time shipping and delivery performance for adidas customers.

Key Accountabilities

Strategy definition

  • Support definition of annual global outbound roadmap in sync with Strategy25; work with markets to define annual targets

  • Work with finance on annual freight cost forecasting

  • Proactively identify outbound transportation cost savings opportunities; raise to- and work with cross-functional partners to implement

  • Incubate new outbound-related topics (e.g. consumer choices, network optimization) - ensure connection with markets and relevant functions

Process Ownership

  • Proactively define global outbound management processes across channels (eCom, Retail, Wholesale); define global frameworks incl. performance management, carrier management, global capacity planning, etc.

  • Provide executional support with his/her team to markets in case of burning issues

Performance Management

  • Develop and maintain standardized performance metrics and tools

  • Drive transparency on outbound performance globally; drive exception management incl. root-cause analysis

Partner Portfolio Management

  • Work with procurement to define supplier strategy; review fit of portfolio per market

  • Develop with procurement and market outbound Leads a consistent approach to carrier performance management and review mechanisms; support/join major business reviews

  • Drive analysis on major carrier performance failures; support market outbound leads in root-causes analysis and resolution

  • Work with procurement and markets on major carrier tenders

System Ownership

  • Define system requirements needs (as per market and business needs) - coordinate with IT System owner for implementation

  • Define system deployment roadmap – in collaboration with Distribution IT owner, markets and Omni; ensure on-time in-full implementation

Best Practice Sharing

  • Identify outbound experts in markets and functions – create and maintain outbound community for exchange of best practices

  • Screen market to identify future outbound trends in the industry and drive new impulses to the organization.

People Management

  • Build the appropriate structure to be able to manage the respective organization effectively, identify and develop the future talents and create realistic succession scenarios for key positions

  • Ensure appropriate leadership skills are present at every level by creating a motivational and supportive work environment in which employees are coached, trained and provided with career opportunities through development

  • Provide team members/direct reports with clear direction and targets that are aligned with business needs and SCM objectives

Knowledge, Capabilities and Experience

  • Extensive knowledge of ground transportation modes (parcel, pallet, LTL/FTL) in the consumer goods industry with emphasis on direct to consumer (DTC). Experience of applying this knowledge to translate the requirements for integrating of LLP into supply chain systems to gain end-to-end visibility

  • Understanding of the bigger picture and end-to-end supply chain with the focus on transportation (DC to customer, consumer)

  • Recent experience and current knowledge of Transportation systems capabilities, and technology platforms (real-time visibility, TMS, carrier integration platforms)

  • Strong record of successfully applying problem solving and project management skills & tools including good planning and organization skills.

  • Ability to think strategically, synthesize complex data and develop innovative solutions.

  • Ability to provide a clear framework for performance to direct reports/project team, able to coach, guide and manage a team.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with different international cultures.

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and facilitation skills, both verbal and written.

  • Team player, high degree of self-management, enthusiasm, drives to perform.

  • Navigate and negotiate skillfully in tough situations with both internal and external groups, can settle differences; can win concessions without damaging relationships.

  • Ability to travel, domestic or international, as required

  • Fluent English (verbal and written)

  • Strong MS-Office skills


  1. Four-year college or university degree with focus on Supply Chain Management

  2. Minimum 5+ year experience in leadership and managing remote teams

  3. Proven track record in driving change

  4. Experience with managing a global transportation management system (TMS) project

  5. Vast experience in multi-national supply chain/logistics/transportation work experience in fast moving consumer goods industry (preferably apparel, fashion background).
