SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is one of 17 Department of Energy (DOE) National Laboratories. Operated by Stanford University on behalf of the DOE, SLAC develops and operates some of the world’s premier science facilities, including the first hard X-ray free-electron laser. Researchers from SLAC and other premier institutions around the world use our facilities to investigate some of the most exciting and important problems facing our society in areas such as clean energy, environmental science, biomedicine, and advanced materials. The Laboratory operates national user facilities for photon science and accelerator development, while also pursuing world-leading research in photon science, accelerator physics, particle physics and astrophysics, materials, energy, and biology within six science mission Directorates.

The SLAC Information Technology department is seeking a Business Intelligence Analyst to support and coordinate lab-wide operational reporting and analytics activities. This is a new role that will have the opportunity to build a BI systems infrastructure and analytics program from the ground up.

Position Overview:

Under minimal supervision, perform requirements gathering across stakeholder groups in a wide range of business intelligence activities that ensure the uniformity, accuracy, and semantic consistency of enterprise data through the application of effective data management, security, stewardship, and governance processes, as well as oversee the implementation and administration of BI tools that meet the need of the lab.

Your Specific Responsibilities Include:

  • Make recommendations and implement analytical and data management systems.

  • Provide complex analysis and recommendations regarding data management and the design of dashboard and reports; may develop interactive queries and dashboards for central and distributed users.

  • Lead and own organization-wide complex business intelligence reporting and analysis initiatives; ensure initiatives directly support the organizational mission and are delivered on schedule and budget.

  • Lead data stewardship efforts and develop the metadata supporting the applicable reporting systems. Define and enforce interface design standards and best practices. Audit compliance and provide direction in non-compliance situations.

  • Coordinate the development and enrichment of an enterprise data model assuring reporting system development builds upon the existing data foundation and data model conflicts are resolved.

  • Troubleshoot business intelligence environment problems and opportunities for improvement and coordinate with application team to resolve application bottlenecks and performance issues.

  • Mentor and support the training of new and existing staff in business intelligence design and development.

  • Coordinate the planning, development and presentation of training for users of BI reporting and analysis.

  • May plan, mentor, coordinate, monitor and review the work of other information analytics-type staff during all phases of a project.

To Be Successful In This Position You Will Bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree and seven years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience. Work experience in a quantitative discipline such as economics, finance, statistics, or engineering.

  • Knowledge of computer system capabilities, business processes and workflow.

  • Strong project management skills and ability to understand and apply the software development lifecycle.

  • Demonstrated ability to review business processes and translate into BI reporting and analysis solutions.

  • Extensive experience in data analysis and root cause analysis and proven problem solving and analytical thinking capabilities.

  • Demonstrated ability with enterprise application and database-driven applications.

  • Substantial experience with relational and dimensional logical data modeling.

  • In-depth knowledge of and ability using MS Office; analytical and business intelligence programs such as PowerBI, business objects, Informatica, Tableau, Matlab, MicroStrategy, Looker, etc.

  • Extensive background and experience with report and analysis design.

  • Experience with the application of User Interface and User Experience best practices.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills; proven presentation experience and comfort with senior management audiences and effective facilitation skills with diverse groups.

  • Ability to prioritize workload and work with minimal supervision.

The expected pay range for this position is $145,000 - $173,000 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
