POSITION OVERVIEW:

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is seeking a Mechanical Designer 3 in the Mechanical Engineering and Technical Services Division (METSD) in the Accelerator Directorate. This Department provides mechanical design/drafting services to multiple SLAC projects, especially the design and support of SLAC’s Linear Coherent Light Source (LCLS) and other accelerator facilities.

Given the nature of this position, SLAC is open to on-site, hybrid, and remote work options.

Your specific responsibilities include:

  • Oversee the design of components or a portion of mechanical systems to modify existing designs and/or to develop and improve manufacturing operations.

  • Manage workflow between design development, engineering and/or project managers and shops to evaluate manufacturability and accuracy of process, set priorities and deadlines.

  • Utilize job-required computer-aided design tools to create and maintain advanced assembly drawings and models.

  • Design and perform in-depth analysis of tolerance studies, compute complex calculations, prepare original rough layouts, and sketch to present design proposal.

  • Provide direction to other designers in terms of new skills and expertise individual designers need to develop.

  • Create design layouts, tolerance studies, weldments for engineering calculations, assembly and detail drawings.

  • Inspect design for accuracy and adherence to engineering criteria/specifications, manufacturing, tooling, material, planning and to appropriate production standards.

  • Determine ease of manufacturing, availability of materials, and specifications.

  • Collaborate with key contacts outside own area of expertise. Attends and contributes to

  • design review meetings.

  • May serve as project leader or provide guidance to less experienced mechanical designers, contribute to design strategy, execution.

  • Develops policies and procedures as they relate to department activities.

  • Designs components or a portion of systems and modifies existing designs to develop and/or improve manufacturing operations.

  • Utilizes Solid Edge (or equivalent) 3D computer-aided design tools create and maintain complex assembly drawings and models.

To be successful in this position you will bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree or AA degree in mechanical design, mechanical engineering or related field, and minimum six years of experience in design, drafting and CAD systems; or combination of education and relevant experience.

  • Minimum three years of industry experience developing product from concept through customer release.

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate across organization and facilitate cross-functional efforts.

  • Demonstrated expertise and fluency in at least one mechanical Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software, preferably Solid Edge, with demonstrated experience in parametric solids modelling and drafting methods.

  • Demonstrated expertise in the management of drawings and technical design documentation, including change control processes and the use of product lifecycle management systems such as Teamcenter.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of ANSI, and ASME design/drawing standards and other applicable standards (IEEE, AIA, AISC, ACI) and application of these ensuring high quality design/drafting output.

  • Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with others.

  • Experience defining and driving adoption of business and engineering best practices and processes.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and demonstrated ability to manage and resolve both technical and people issues and take corrective actions independently.

  • Ability to manage changing priorities, deadlines and perform detailed work with high level of accuracy and attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience and/or background in the following is desired but not required:

  • Experience designing for manufacturing.

  • Practical Experience designing and installing particle beam systems and equipment.

  • Practical experience in design of ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) systems and equipment.

  • Practical experience in magnet design and/or fabrication.

The expected pay range for this position is $117,000 to $151,000 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
