Assistant Professor, Clinical Educator Track

Job Description

The Assistant Professor will manage research projects, and will supervise research projects of interns, undergraduate or graduate students. The Assistant Professor may lecture or conduct demonstrations and teach across UM schools. The Assistant Professor will partner and collaborate with other faculty in the Department of Public Health Sciences, and perhaps other departments throughout UM, to advance knowledge, training, and education.

This position additionally requires strong professional experience in infection prevention and control. In this capacity, the incumbent will function as a consultant, educator, role model, change agent and researcher at the health system. They will be involved in development and review of infection prevention and control policies and procedures in conjunction with departmental leaders to ensure alignment of current standards and guidelines. They will ensure employees are educated and trained on these policies and procedures. The incumbent ensures oversight of the facility’s compliance within the UHealth’s policies and procedures as well as state and federal regulations related to infection prevention and control.

Key Areas of Responsibility in Academy Role

  • Reporting to the Chairman of the Department of Public Health Sciences, the incumbent will conduct, collaborate and manage scientific research and investigations

  • Supervise, mentor and manage postdoctoral fellows as well as graduate students engaged in collaborative research projects

  • Explore and develop appropriate research collaborations both within the UM Health System and other University of Miami departments and schools

  • Collect, analyze, and report research data by way of writing and submitting scientific papers and abstracts, as well as submit pertinent grant proposals

  • Presents ongoing work and findings to colleagues and at academic/research conferences

    Key Areas of Responsibility in Professional Role at UHealth

  • Reporting to the Executive Director of Infection Control and the Medical Director of Infection control, the incumbent will help develop, review and revise infection prevention and control policies to ensure alignment of current standards and guidelines. Ensure employees are educated and trained in these policies and procedures.

  • Collects, analyzes, and reports infection data. Evaluates medical products and clinical procedures to optimize infection control standards.

  • Consults on infection risk assessments, prevention, and control strategies (including occupational health, construction, and emergency management).

  • Facilitates education efforts directed at interventions to reduce infection risks. Develops and reviews policies and procedures, including pandemic preparedness.

  • Implements changes mandated by regulatory accrediting agencies and provisions high-quality services in a cost-efficient manner.

  • Performs surveillance activities and applies an epidemiological approach to problem solving.

  • Utilizes externally defined criteria/algorithms to determine healthcare-associated infection.

  • Performs analysis and meaningful presentation of data and participates in process improvement teams.

  • Collaborates with leadership to prepare data and formats and presents reports to hospital-specific committees.

  • Implements educational programs to support infection prevention and control policies, procedures, and practice plans. Provides in-service training programs as requested, and educates personnel about infection control and infectious diseases, both formally and informally.

  • Advises personnel regarding infected or potentially infected patients concerning barrier requirements, including when patients should be removed from isolation.

  • Contributes to policy implementation, ensuring that staff are following proper cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization procedures. Participates in education of public health alerts and disease prevention.

  • Monitors and performs surveillance of targeted and non-targeted issues in accordance with the Infection Control Plan, CDC guidelines, and regulatory requirements.

  • Educates clinical and non-clinical staff on multi-drug resistant organisms. Develops educational brochures and information sheets to better educate patients, visitors, and staff on multi-drug resistant organisms.

  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

    Qualifications:

The ideal candidate should have a strong background in healthcare epidemiology as well as professional experience as an infection preventionist in complex health systems.

Requirements:

  • Strong background in infection prevention and healthcare leadership

  • Experience in developing policies and procedures

  • Knowledge and experience of surveillance methods

  • Critical problem solving and data analysis

  • Thorough knowledge of local, State and federal rules, regulations and procedures pertaining to infection control

    Requirements (essential)

Faculty members in the Department of Public Health Sciences will need to meet the following requirements:

  • Ph.D. Epidemiology or closely related field.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and application of scientific techniques

  • Strong written and oral communication skills

  • Ability to work with diverse constituency

  • Computer literacy

  • Completion of successful academic and research work that has resulted in authorship and/or co-authorship of papers in peer reviewed journals while serving as a faculty, and/or as a scientist.

  • Demonstrates ability to develop collaborative research projects in a manner consistent with the mentor’s research plan and contribute towards the making of scientific advances in the field of work.

  • Demonstrates ability to teach in the clinical setting and/or through presentations of papers and/or seminars.

  • Successful track of research projects/funds and contribution to grant applications that are collaborative in nature and/or demonstrated ability to write competitive grants independently.

  • Demonstrates desire to move towards scientific and professional independence.
