POSITION SUMMARY\ Under the supervision of the Metering Services Supervisor, the Meter Reader I position includes field work in the\ accurate reading, recording and reporting of electrical and water consumption by utility customers for proper billing. Meter Readers usually work alone following designated routes collecting and recording meter readings. Employee will also perform, at times, some tasks of a Building Maintenance Worker/Custodian. Employee must have the ability to establish and maintain harmonious and cooperative working relationships with the public and other City employees.\ ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS\ Reasonable Accommodations Statement\ To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Reasonable Accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.\ Essential Functions Statement(s)\ Read electric and water meters on assigned routes and accurately records readings.\ Operate handheld computerized reading devices and laptop.\ Check to see that meters are functioning properly, reporting defective meters to supervisor.\ Clear mud, debris and other matter from meter boxes or pits in order to obtain accurate meter readings.\ Report any noticeable damage or tampered meters to supervisor.\ Report any noticeable or potential field problems relating to any public works or public safety hazards.\ Perform special readings or re-reads of meters when necessary for verification of excessively high or low\ readings or at other times as required.\ Provide customer service by answering customer questions over the phone and in person and providing\ requested information.\ Operate a City vehicle in daily performance of duties and perform basic maintenance checks on vehicle.\ Ensures the cleanliness of assigned vehicle, tools and equipment.\ Install, disconnect and test electrical meter equipment within level of expertise.\ Assist the Building & Facility Supervisor in maintaining buildings in good repair, performing routine cleaning,\ painting, plumbing, electrical repair and other related maintenance activities as directed within scope of\ demonstrated skill.
