Antech Diagnostics Histology Technician - (Day) in Mississauga, Ontario

PURPOSE OF JOB:

The Histology Laboratory Technician performs laboratory analyses and tests. Prepares samples, sets up instruments, runs tests and reads, interprets and releases results.

Shift: Monday - Friday 8am - 4:30pm

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each essential function.   • Embed-Provide quality embedding , accurately embed an average of 60 blocks per hour, unloading VIP Tissue Processer, scan barcoded cassette in LIS for the appropriate worklist. Embed block per SOP / Protocol prioritizing stat and manifest blocks Release block in LIS. Maintain embedding station as required per SOP and accepted protocols

  • Microtomy- Provide quality microtomy, accurately cut an average of 37 routine blocks per hour. Effectively section paraffin embedded tissue block to micrometer thickness, float section on a water bath and mount section on a frosted end slide per SOP. Prioritize stat and manifest blocks

  • Reconcile all Antrim pending list for any work completed and release block in LIS

  • Operate Roche Benchmark special stain instrument

  • Perform manual stains as required

  • Calibrate and run Quality Control on the machines and assist with daily, weekly and monthly maintenance of the machines.

  • Exercises judgment in evaluating and reporting results.

  • Report any technical/QC problems to their lead tech or supervisor.

  • Cross-train and develop knowledge of multiple specialties within department/lab.

  • Reads, understands and follows applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's), including safety and quality procedures. Maintains clean and organized work area. Restocks supplies as needed.

  • Participates in improving lab efficiency, quality, and cooperation.

  • Consult with senior peers on non-complex tasks to learn through experience.

  • Applies job skills and lab policies and procedures to complete a variety of tasks.

  • May be asked to participate in enterprise initiatives, special projects, and other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • B.S in Biology or Life Sciences required. HT(ASCP)/HTL(ASCP) or course work in accredited Histology Technician program strongly preferred.

  • Internal Candidates require at least 6 months employment at Antech and must be in good standing (good attendance record, proven history of quality work performance, and no disciplinary actions.)

  • The candidate must be pre-approved by our standard Pathologist evaluation prior to acceptance to the position.

  • The candidate must be pre-approved by the RVP

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Laboratory skills, with experience setting up, running and reading lab tests and operating lab instruments preferred but not required.

  • Familiar with care and use of microtome, embedding stations and staining equipment

  • Willingness to perform detailed, repetitive tasks to established benchmarks

  • Knowledge of lab equipment and procedures.

  • Knowledge of medical and laboratory terminology and Microbiology procedures and equipment helpful.

  • General science background

  • Attention to detail

  • Organized with ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Communication skills, both verbal and written

  • Positive, can-do attitude

  • Supervisory skills, if a lead position

  • Personal computer skills, including strong typing ability and proficient use of Microsoft Office

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Extensive sitting, phone, and computer use

  • Capable of standing continuously for up to 2 hours

  • Extend and reach with hands and arms and use hands and fingers

  • Occasionally required to bend, kneel, stoop, or crouch

  • May be required to lift, move, and carry up to 20 lbs.

  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

  • Hearing ability to effectively communicate via the telephone and in person

  • Ability to communicate verbally on the phone and in person

  • Fluency in the English language

  • Extended hours may be needed

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Laboratory environment with potential biohazards present

  • Work under close to moderate supervision with limited latitude for independent judgment.

  • Normally receives general instructions on routine work, detailed instructions on new assignments.

Potential for exposure to agents known to cause zoonotic disease in humans and use of potentially hazardous chemicals as defined by the National Hazard Communication Standards. A complete list of such chemicals is available from department supervision.
