This means having validated strategies to ensure our operations can adapt quickly – activating people, facilities, technology and third-party relationships to get the job done. The Enterprise Resilience team supervises this coordinated planning and preparedness globally.

Role

The Director is responsible for driving engagement and accountability for end-to-end BCM planning by first line operational risk teams and many other partners involved in operationalizing and executing what is required under the program.

This is a key role on the team. The Director (and direct reports) represent the enterprise BCM program to all internal partners. The Director will influence BCM Policy and approaches and then ensure these expectations are communicated, understood, and executed across American Express.

You will have a global view into operations across the Company and will collaborate with many teams, including Centers of Excellence in the Technology organization (e.g. Disaster Recovery and Technology Risk) and Third-Party Lifecycle Management. The successful candidate will:

  • Build relationships with senior leadership to ensure operational resilience is appropriately proven and reflected in a culture of active risk management in all parts of the Company.

  • Develop and lead all aspects of a calendar that satisfies all BCM Policy requirements (e.g. BIA Certifications) and delivers against an ambitious agenda of program improvements. You will ensure the right prioritization is being made by the ER team and by all first line business teams and COE’s.

  • Develop and deliver training to the teams responsible for completing BCM Program requirements and operate a QA/QC process to ensure the requirements are being executed satisfactorily (communicate these approaches to 2nd Line, 3rd Line, and other key partners as appropriate)

  • Own reporting capabilities that deliver timely metrics to evidence status of BCM program objectives and enable communication and monitoring of risk. This includes external reporting to Regulators.

  • Manage a team consisting of a Manager and several Analysts in support of program goals.

Qualifications

At least seven years professional experience with large-scale business continuity (continuity of operations) programs (corporate or government), including:

  • A demonstrated knowledge of all aspects of business continuity lifecycle including BC and DR Plans, Risk Assessments, Mitigation Strategies, Tests and Exercises. The candidate will also have experience and a point of view regarding resiliency concepts in the domains of technology (including cyber), data strategy, and third-party management

  • Success at developing and executing strategies that better identify, communicate, and manage risk. An ability to inspire an active culture of risk management and continuous improvement

  • Experience presenting to and communicating with senior internal and external partners and comfort with influencing and directing prioritization decisions and outcomes

  • Inspire excellence in your team by leading through example and embrace enterprise-first thinking.

Academic Background

A bachelor’s degree is highly desirable. Post-graduate education can be substituted for years of experience. Applicable certifications in business continuity, crisis management, information security, and/or information technology is desirable (e.g. DRI, FEMA).

Behavioral Skills/Capabilities

Successful candidate must be self-motivated and comfortable (re)prioritizing as it can be “all hands on deck” when the situation requires it. Influencing and building followership across a range of partners will be important to drive progress and deliver results. Prior experience in successful people leadership not required but a plus.
