THE POSITION The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is looking for a dedicated individual with excellent attention to detail and strong analytical abilities to join our team as an Engineering Technician. Our year-long training program covers various engineering areas such as construction, maintenance, highway safety, and traffic, preparing you for a permanent role within our District. DESCRIPTION OF WORK In this role, your responsibilities will include performing a range of technical tasks across different areas of PennDOT, such as design, construction, and maintenance. You will provide engineering support to all units within PennDOT and gain a fundamental understanding of departmental policies, procedures, responsibilities, and workflow. The training program will involve rotational assignments in Engineering Districts to familiarize you with district personnel and procedures, as well as participation in work projects to achieve training objectives. Classroom training will also be provided as directed by the program coordinator.

All work assignments will undergo thorough screening and review to ensure completeness, technical accuracy, and a sound approach. Upon successful completion of the training program, you will be assigned to the Bridge Unit. In this role, you will be responsible for preparing various bridge and structural plans, maps, and drawings using prescribed methods and procedures. This work will require technical and drafting skills, with the use of Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) to create technical bridge and structural drawings.

Your tasks will involve developing final bridge and structural plans based on preliminary sketches, existing highway plans, existing bridge plans, and field survey data. This includes working on structures such as reinforced concrete box culverts, simple span bridges, metal plate culverts, and bridge rehabilitation projects. Mathematical calculations using algebra, plane geometry, and trigonometry will be performed to compute plan quantities and assist in structural drafting under professional and technical guidance. Additionally, you will participate in field inspections of bridges for rehabilitation and replacement projects, developing inspection notes and sketches with guidance from professional and technical staff.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

Full-time employment Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with 30-minute lunch. Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, after initial onboarding. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Montoursville.

An associate degree in surveying, drafting, designing, civil, or any other appropriate field of engineering technology. Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.
