Overview | The Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O) employs a workforce of approximately 2,700 staff, represented by 15 collective negotiations agreements, and is responsible for institutional strategic initiatives and operations, which encompasses an expansive range of comprehensive service and business operations across the State of New Jersey. These include planning and construction, facilities, public safety and emergency operations, environmental health and safety, transportation, housing, and auxiliary/retail operations. |
Posting Summary | Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Health Safety Specialist II as the department's continual presence, liaison and provider of routine environmental, health and safety services to an assigned portion of the University. Among the key duties of this position are the following: Principally responsible for performing work related to environmental, health and safety, laboratory safety, emergency response, effective communication with client group, and creating and/or visual inspection of records for the university to assure that only sanctioned activities are carried out and that those activities are performed:
1. in accordance with Federal, State & local requirements and University policies/procedures 2. without adverse health effects on faculty, staff, students, visitors and community 3. in a manner that will protect the environment 4. so that the University's resources are conserved and future liability is limited |

Minimum Education and Experience | - Bachelor's degree preferably in a physical, chemical, or life science, or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
- A minimum of five (5) years related experience.

Certifications/Licenses | - Training and experience sufficient to take first level of certification in EH&S profession and intent to continue towards certification.
|
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities | - Scientific training in the physical, chemical, or life sciences at the undergraduate level and experience equivalent to a Master's Degree or completion of a graduate level program in Industrial Hygiene, or Safety Engineering.
- Also requires excellent computer, interpersonal, verbal, and writing skills.
- Must able to lift up to 50 pounds, have a valid driver's license, pass a physical examination, and be able to wear a respirator.
- Experience and familiarity with the resources that are available to help make sound technical judgements for the resolution of a broad spectrum of issues in the EH&S field.

Preferred Qualifications | - Master's Degree or completion of a graduate level program in Health Physics, Industrial Hygiene, Safety Engineering, or Hazardous Waste Management.
- Ability, experience, judgement and maturity to carry out all departmental responsibilities and to interact effectively with University community.
- Excellent time management skills to routinely deal with multiple issues and activities.
- Active membership and participation in an EH&S professional society.
- Knowledge, use and limitation of various sampling equipment.

- Position requires the person to be able to use a PC, Word, Excel, PPT and other EH&S software programs and databases.

Physical Demands and Work Environment | - Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds, use respiratory protection up to and including SCBAs, work in PPE including suits, and be able to work in a variety of working conditions, including heights, confined or restricted spaces, temperature extremes, outdoors, etc.
