Posting Summary | Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Research Teaching Specialist III (RTS III) for Rutgers Institute for Translational Medicine and Science (RITMS).The RTSIII will be managing the day-to-day activities of research projects performed within the Burdo laboratory. The RTSIII will perform a high level of research work in an active research laboratory setting with state-of-the-art facilities to study human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) pathogenesis and HIV cure research. The RTSIII will be providing complex technical assistance to the PI in support of various research activities; serving as an authoritative source on research practices, precedents, theory, and principles; establishing priorities; ensuring all projects are completed in a timely fashion; providing training to student workers and research technicians; managing regulatory protocols and paperwork regarding IRB, IACUC, and IBC to ensure all are up to date. The RTSIII will assisting in laboratory safety policies and procedures in accordance with research protocols; assist with staff adheres to all policies, procedures, and professional standards within the laboratory; orders laboratory supplies and manage inventory; manages large volume laboratory shipments; Assist with instructing student workers. The primary responsibilities of the Research Teaching Specialist will be to perform experiments using procedures such as flow cytometry, ELISAs, histology, immunohistochemistry, isolation of cells from blood, western blots, and qPCR. Other responsibilities will be lab maintenance and organization and to perform other duties as assigned.Among the key duties of this position are the following: - Cell Culture work: media preparation, isolation and purification of cell lines from human and animal tissue and blood samples, quality control testing, and daily maintenance of cell lines.
- Immunological assays: processing samples for fluorescent, confocal, or EM staining, immunohistochemistry & immunocytochemistry staining, ELISAs, and flow cytometry/FACS.
- Molecular Biology work: RNA/DNA isolation & purification, PCR and qPCR, immunoprecipitations, and western blots.
- Assists with Generating and analyzing data for peer-reviewed publications and grant applications.
- Assists with providing scientific instruction, guidance, and mentoring for students, fellows, technicians, and laboratory assistants.
- Assists with the Management regulatory protocols and paperwork regarding IRB, IACUC, and IBC to ensure all are up to date.
- Operate and maintain moderately complex laboratory equipment. Regularly check equipment for malfunctions and perform minor repairs.
- As assigned, carries out administrative duties, including ordering supplies for the laboratory, keeping accurate records and notes, working knowledge of MS office to keep inventories of experimental reagents, data analysis, and other general lab duties.
- Assists with ensuring that the staff and students are trained and evaluated on their knowledge of and adherence to compliance policies and procedures specific to their jobs.

Minimum Education and Experience | - The applicants should have a degree in one of the following fields: biology, immunology, molecular biology, virology, or another related field.
- The applicants should have a Ph.D. in a relevant science, or a master's degree in a relevant science plus one (1) or more years of related research experience, or a bachelor's degree in a relevant science plus two (2) years of related research experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities | - Expertise in performing basic scientific assays including RNA/DNA extraction, and protein preparation, qPCR & real time-PCR, western blot analysis, ELISA are essential. Additional training will be provided as needed.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team are required.

Preferred Qualifications | - Prior supervisory/lead experience is an asset.
- Experience with HIV, virology, or immunology are preferred.

Equipment Utilized | - Tissue culture hoods and incubators, centrifuges, electrophoresis apparatus for proteins and nucleic acids, electroporator, flow cytometry, thermal cyclers, light, confocal and fluorescent microscopes, histopathology processor, embedding center, microtome and cryostat, ELISA plate washer, ELISA plate reader, ddPCR, qPCR, and other equipment as needed.

Physical Demands and Work Environment | - Occasional lifting 25-50 lbs.
- Intermittently sitting/standing/stooping, typically sitting at a desk or table.
- Must be able to work at a computer for an extended period and must be able to operate specialized laboratory/scientific equipment.
- Biosafety Level 2 and 2+ laboratory environment working with human and animal fluids and tissue. Requires laboratory safety training.
- Caustic and toxic chemicals.
- Handle controlled substances such as pharmaceutical, radiological, or hazardous materials.
