Title: Histology Assistant - Part Time

Location: Upper East Side

Org Unit: Lab of Comparative Pathology

Work Days: Weekdays and some weekends

Exemption Status: Non-Exempt

Salary Range: $31.65 - $36.59

*As required under NYC Human Rights Law Int 1208-2018 - Salary range for this role when Hired for NYC Offices

Position Summary

Under direction, supports the laboratory's pathology service by preparing, processing and staining tissue specimens for examination by the pathologist This role ensures accurate and timely processing of specimens and also renders assistance in the day-to-day administration of the laboratory

Job Responsibilities

  • Answers phones, responds to inquiries and triages calls to appropriate personnel.

  • Assists with preparation of tissue specimens according to specific research protocols.

  • Performs histologic staining and prepares slides from tissue sections for microscopic examination and diagnosis. Files slides as needed.

  • Performs any on-site special stains and immunohistochemical stains according to procedure manual. Maintains knowledge of procedural theory and utilizes it in troubleshooting staining problems.

  • Performs frozen cytostat sectioning and prepares frozen sections of surgical specimens and animal tissue for microscopic examination.

  • Monitors equipment temperature; correctly labels and stores all reagents; responsible for work area, instruments and equipment maintenance. Escalates issues of defective equipment or missing supplies.

  • Maintains the inventory for lab supplies and submits order requests.

  • Ensures laboratory is in compliance with requirements for accreditation and regulatory agencies.

Education

  • High school diploma or GED

Experience

Approximately 1 year of clinical or histopathology experience

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Licenses and Certifications

  • AALAS Certification at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) level, or Advanced Diploma, or Certification in Aquaculture or Aquatic Management and Care
