NYU Steinhardt Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions, Program in Vocal Performance seeks qualified candidates to add the Vocal Performance Collaborative Piano Roster. Pianists added to our roster will be considered to play for voice lessons, and may be considered for further opportunities such as playing for classes or productions whenever the need arises. Vocal Performance students are responsible for coordinating their own pianists for their lessons and recitals. These assignments are made once the voice faculty's teaching schedules are established, usually 2-3 weeks before the start of classes each semester. Additional playing assignments for classes, productions, etc. are made by the full time faculty based on need, availability, and the expertise of our collaborators. Therefore, this part-time position doesn’t guarantee a minimum set amount of hours of work per week. Pianists in this position serve the vocal performance program, which has concentrations in classical, music theatre and contemporary vocal studies. Additional duties my include being asked to assist with music direction on mainstage and student-organization productions to be compensated separately on a project-by-project basis.
In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the contact hour rate for this position is $69.63 per hour . This rate is based on the collective bargaining agreement with Local 7902.
Master’s degree in piano performance preferred.
Professional experience playing for productions such as musicals, operas, concerts or other.
Experience accompanying singers in various genres and styles
Cover letter: addressing previous experience and specifying what styles you feel most comfortable playing (classical, musical theatre or contemporary/pop repertoire). Also, please describe how comfortable you feel playing from chord charts, transposing (in real time or ahead of time) and elaborate on your improvisation skill level when asked to play jazz or other styles that require improvisation.
