Statement of Purpose
This is a Registered Nurse position whose primary responsibility is the
oversight and coordination of daily operations in the Emergency
Department with the goal of insuring safe, timely, efficient, and
effective care to patients in this setting. Additional responsibilities
include, collaborating with nursing education to ensure the emergency
department specific educational needs of the team are met.
Reports To: VP of Patient Care Services and is a part of the Patient
Care Services LeadershipTeam. Works closely with ED Medical Director to
ensure high quality, timely and appropriate care for patients.
Direct Responsibility and Oversight: Registered Nurses, Paramedics,
Patient Observers and Emergency Room Techs.
Essential Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities
Quality
1. Collaborates with medical staff, nursing leadership, nursing staff,
and other clinicians to develop, implement, and monitor effectiveness of
evidence-based protocols.
2. Provides leadership by participating in human resources management
processes including recruitment, selection, orientation, professional
development, competency assessment, and annual performance evaluations.
3. Assists with the development and implementation of a performance
improvement program for areas of responsibility.
4. Reviews staffing patterns, census, and acuity of nursing units to
verify staffing is consistent with patient needs. Adjusts such staffing
patterns to meet productivity and benchmarks, based on hospital mission.
Morale and Culture
1. Assists with daily patient care and assists where needed during
times of high volume and high acuity as needed.
2. Participates in and promotes staff rounding to address caring
practices, patient and family needs, and discharge planning.
3. Acts as a formal and informal consultant, assisting with change and
acting as a change agent to promote caring and evidence-based practices.
4. Promotes an environment that is collaborative and supportive of
staffs personal and professional growth.
5. Contributes to a culture that facilitates development of clinical
expertise of the team by role modeling, teaching, coaching, and
mentoring.

1. Communicates issues that arise from individual differences to
nursing leadership and collaborates with nursing leadership to improve
awareness of these issues in nursing staff, medical staff, and other
health care providers.
2. Provides an appropriate climate for learning and facilitates the

educational opportunities (unit-based orientation, in-services,
continuing education, 1:1 coaching, etc.) and fostering the development
of competence in the Emergency Department.

1. Serves as a mentor for professional practice.
2. Identifies the learning needs of staff and designs educational
opportunities to enhance knowledge and skills of the staff.
3. Develops, adapts, and evaluates educational programs for the
emergency department team.

5. Evaluates own nursing practice in relation to professional practice
standards, relevant statutes and regulations and maintaining continuing
professional nursing competence.

Collaboration
1. Participates in departmental, hospital and system programs,
committees, and special projects to achieve desired outcomes.
2. Teaches, mentors, coaches, and role models nursing personnel to
promote growth and accountability throughout the healthcare team.
3. Assists in the creation, implementation, and evaluation of programs
in collaboration with organizational leadership, nursing leadership and
other departments.

1. Integrates knowledge of NCHs mission, vision, goals, and systems
into staff and patient strategies, development, and implementation.
3. Promotes system redesign to promote a culture of safety for
patients, families, and staff.
4. Collaborates and communicates frequently with the Directors of
Patient Care Services to ensure timely response and to identify issues.
5. Recognizes, responds, and provides follow-up for issues, concerns,
and suggestions on behalf of the patient population and staff.
6. Assumes accountability for efficient use of resources:
a. Provides input regarding budgeting, purchasing, annual objectives,
and utilization of budgeted funds.
