Description

The City of Norfolk Department of Parks and Recreation is hiring a team of Park Ranger Assistants. This team will assist Park Rangers in the daily protection of parks and open spaces. Park Ranger Assistants will work to proactively protect natural resources and aide in providing general assistance to park visitors while maintaining and enforcing public safety.

Departmental Starting Hourly Rate: $16.25

Essential Functions

Essential functions include but are not limited to:

  • Provides information and appropriate assistance concerning department programs (recreation, parks, or open spaces) and related facilities to include recommending and identify natural resource problems; assist with developing solutions and implementing projects for natural resource protection and rehabilitation and preparing sites for reserved group activities and events.

  • Protects parks and open space ecosystems, including vegetation and wildlife.

  • Patrols recreation, parks, open space’s locations for the purpose of preventing, detecting, enforcing violations of laws, educating and informing the public; explains and interprets applicable codes and pertinent regulations; objectively handles a wide variety of public contact situations.

  • Under general supervision, this position is responsible for performing park management, and assist with general park operations.

  • Addresses difficult or contentious issues in a constructive manner.

  • Assists other public safety agencies when necessary.

  • Provides crowd and traffic control coverage at special events and assigned activities.

  • Responds to contact Park Rangers in emergencies and medical situations at parks and open space locations.

  • Drives a city motor vehicle, bicycle, or ATV to travel to or patrol parks and open space locations.

  • Responsible for patrolling an assigned park space and cleaning the park and enforcing park hours.

Education/Experience

Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes. Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.

Any level of outside work experience to understand litter management.

Ability to walk for long periods of time.

Additional Information & Requirements

Work Location: Lakewood Athletics Office, 1612 Willow Wood Drive, Norfolk, VA 23509

Work Schedule: Sunday through Saturday. Hours vary, flexible schedule required. This is a part-time position not to exceed 30 hours working 4 to 6 hour shifts.

  • Regular full-time and permanent part-time employees may receive paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, employer paid pension plan, basic life insurance, voluntary participation in medical and dental, Section 457 deferred compensation, long-term disability, optional life insurance for self, spouse and children, medical and dependent care reimbursement plans, access to membership in credit union and employer provided parking.

  • Special project/grant employees are generally eligible for the same benefits of regular full-time employees; however, retirement, life insurance and participation in health plans vary depending upon funding and authorization.

  • Temporary/seasonal and part-time employees are generally only eligible for employer provided parking and access to membership in credit union.

  • Retirement

    If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

    If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

  • The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
