Amazon Sr. Embedded Software Engineer, Kuiper Government Solutions in Northridge, California

Project Kuiper is an initiative to launch a constellation of Low Earth Orbit satellites, to provide low-latency, high-speed broadband connectivity to unserved and underserved communities around the world.

As a Senior Embedded Software Development Engineer on the Kuiper Government Solutions team you will play a pivotal role in designing and developing software for ground terminals and satellite vehicles. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to a groundbreaking new system with few legacy constraints.

You will work with systems, product, and hardware teams to define, implement, test, and release innovative solutions that extract more capability from the project baseline and enable new features in our next generation systems.

You will tackle challenging situations and have the opportunity to work with multiple customers and technical teams inside and outside Amazon.

This role is based in Redmond, WA, or Northridge, CA, and includes US relocation benefits. Onsite work is required at least 3 days a week.

Security Clearance: Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain a US Government security clearance of TS/SCI, so you must be a U.S. citizen for consideration.

Key job responsibilities

• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define embedded software requirements and architecture

• Develop and optimize embedded software components for time-sensitive platforms, ensuring efficient resource utilization and reliable performance

• Implement and test software to handle data processing, network protocols, signal processing, and device control on satellite and ground terminals

• Contribute to system integration efforts, working closely with hardware engineers to ensure seamless interaction between software and hardware components

• Participate in code and design reviews, identify areas for improvement, and maintain high standards to ensure software quality and reliability

• Debug and troubleshoot software and hardware integration issues, employing tools and techniques to identify and resolve anomalies

About the team

Kuiper Government Solutions is a multi-disciplinary team developing targeted and scalable solutions for custom satellite and ground applications. We are dedicated to supporting United States and allied government customers.

We are open to hiring candidates to work out of one of the following locations:

Northridge, CA, USA | Redmond, WA, USA

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent

  • 5+ years of non-internship professional software development experience

  • 5+ years of programming with at least one software programming language experience

  • 5+ years of leading design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience

  • Experience as a mentor, tech lead or leading an engineering team

  • Proficiency in embedded software architecture and design for fault-tolerant systems

  • Experience in C, C++, or Rust software development for resource-constrained targets

  • Strong skills in debugging, optimization, and unit testing of embedded systems

  • Excellent written and verbal communication

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in computer science or equivalent

  • 5+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience

  • Fundamental knowledge of electronics and networks

  • Familiarity with networking protocols (TCP/IP, UDP, etc.)

  • Knowledge of low-level digital protocols (Ethernet, I2C, PCIe, SPI, etc.)

  • Understanding of bootloaders and Linux kernel internals, including process scheduling, memory management, concurrency/synchronization, file systems, and networking subsystems

  • Understanding of cybersecurity principles and practices

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $134,500/year in our lowest geographic market up to $261,500/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
