Reporting to the Manager, Regional Monitoring, the Environmental Monitoring Specialist is responsible for coordinating all marine and terrestrial monitoring programs for Sustainable Development, organising environmental working groups, and maintaining management plan updates. This role is accountable for reporting including reviewing external reports, and drafting content for internal reports.

Main Accountabilities

• Support the implementation of the Sustainable Development Policy and Project Certificate commitments by coordinating all marine and terrestrial monitoring programs, administering environmental working groups, revising management plans to include key mitigations, and developing annual compliance reports;

• Support the manager by tracking and organizing commitments to ensure compliance with terms and conditions related to environmental monitoring, and implement environmental requirements from changes to the terms and conditions, new commitments, amended agreements or when required for approval;

• Lead strategies and work with external parties to increase community-based monitoring initiatives;

• Support the implementation of Project Environmental Management Systems by developing monitoring programs, reviewing results, and identifying the need for follow-up in the form of adaptive management;

• Prepare reports on environmental monitoring by translating reports with technical language into plain language and share with local communities and external stakeholders;

• Support meetings with various groups such as environmental working groups and community consultation meetings by coordinating the logistics and recording meeting minutes;

• Coordinate the implementation of environmental field monitoring programs by collaborating with Site Environment staff and Operations team;

• Perform administrative duties such as maintaining records of communications with external stakeholders & establishing processes to track commitment status for quarterly reporting;

• Maintain up to date sustainability best practices for the department by conducting research and providing reports to the department;

• Support Baffinland participation in technical conferences and industry associations;

• Foster positive relationships with community members and leaders.

Main Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in sustainable development, environmental science, engineering or related field;

• Master’s degree in sustainable development, environmental science, engineering or related field is an asset.

• Minimum three (3) years of related work experience in the environmental or sustainable development field

• Experience with Staketracker or other stakeholder relations management systems;

• Experience with regulatory reporting and technical writing;

• Experience working with contractors;

• Experience with field monitoring programs.
